1. Determine what job vacancies to fill.

These will set the limits and guidelines that applicants will consider and make it easier when screening those who are not fit for the job.

2. Take time in reading the resumes.

Avoid rushing the hiring process. Without an HR department in place, you’ll need to take a few hours from your schedule and read every resume that you received. This can help you weed out those whom you think can’t handle the duties. On the other hand, you’ll be able to spot qualified applicants, instead of rushing over them between meetings.

3. Check out the candidates’ online profiles.

Printed resumes are not the only piece of when choosing a candidate. You might want to check out their professional profiles online too. Scan relevant information their accounts on LinkedIn or XING if these are available. However, be careful to turn to personal sites such as Facebook. From bias to having the right policies in place, there are a number of risks.

Since you have just started a small business, you may require your applicants to wear a variety of hats; it’s important that is made clear. This not only ensures you are choosing the right candidate, but you may notice who is excited about the business in general; who is willing to throw themselves into the well-being of your company.

5. Give what is right for the job.

Even as a small business, you shouldn’t sacrifice the compensation of your staff. If your offer will be as equal (if not greater) than what the job requires, then you’ll find the right people. To make the right decision here, be sure to check with best practices for your industry, size, etc.
