Small businesses can be more work for the people running them than even very large ones.  If the buck stops with you, you’re likely to be taking up a lot of the slack – and there’s quite a lot of slack.  Businesses have many moving parts, and if you’re trying to handle sales, strategy, and website administration on your own, you may be a prime candidate for small business support services.  Let’s consider what an outside firm can do for you, and what to watch out for if you decide to hire one.

There are a wide range of support services available to small businesses, in many different configurations.  Some firms offer comprehensive, bumper-to-bumper company rejuvenation packages, and these can cover everything from accounting to human resources.  Other plans are far more specific, and can tackle just one of the problems you’d like to solve.

For example, if you’re looking to create or revamp your company website, a small business support company would be able to handle it for you.  It’s the kind of expertise you’re not likely to have in-house, and it’s complicated enough to warrant professional help.  They’ll be able to mount the site according to your specifications and price points, so that you’re able to project the face of your company to online consumers.

Other services are even more specific and useful for your day-to-day operations.  Having trouble staying on top of your incoming phone calls and taking messages properly?  They can set you up with an automated phone answering system that routes calls to the appropriate extension and directs the messages to the right mailbox.

At the least, IT support is going to be necessary to a company filled with computers – and what kind of company isn’t these days?  Unless you have someone on staff who has the time and expertise to resolve any networking or other IT issues that may arise, you’ll probably want to outsource to a firm that can handle those kinds of problem quickly and reliably.

As mentioned, there are many support services out there with many different options.  You may find that a large firm will try to press upon you more services than you need in packages that are beyond your means.  Or you may find a small one unable to meet your standards.

It’s really best to know what you want before you get started.  That way, you’ll be comfortable entering negotiations with the sure knowledge of what you’re looking for and how much you want to spend.
