Interviewing for a new job is a long, tough process. If you make it to the point of getting an offer, congratulations are in order, but not so fast—the hard part isn't over yet.
Negotiating salary is one of the trickier parts of interviewing for a new job, but it's also an essential one. Not only does it show your new potential employer that you believe in yourself and your value, but it's also a better time to negotiate for more money as opposed to asking for a raise.
It makes sense, but a shocking 1/5 of American workers never negotiate salary, and only 31 percent always do, according to a Salary.com survey via Chron. Why? Most people cite fear, and 21 percent of respondents shared that they feared losing the job offer if they were to haggle.
Unsurprisingly, men are more confident when it comes to negotiating. Fifty-five percent of women are apprehensive about negotiating, compared to 39 percent of men. Similarly, 46 percent of men say they always ask, while only 39 percent of women do, according to Salary.com.

Confidence is one of the most important aspects of your job search, and this is absolutely true of asking for more money. If you've made it as far as an offer, your prospective employer is already convinced that you're awesome, and they expect that you'll negotiate.
