How CFOs Find Layoff AlternativesThis is pretty grim for a popularity contest, but one you should know about if you're a CFO contemplating layoffs. Financial Executives International (FEI) and Baruch College's Zicklin School of Business surveyed 334 corporate CFOs on labor-cost savings short of layoffs and here's how they stack up: 51% said they were trying salary freezes, 29% said they were redistributing responsibilities, eliminating bonuses or restructuring and for the rest of the list, salary decreases 20%, shortened work week 16%, mandatory unpaid time off 11% and option to telecommute 3%. An overwhelming majority of the CFOs surveyed also predicted no recovery till 2010. Get the details from Baruch College. --Jeff B. Copeland, Content Product Manager

The High Wire Balancing Act: Cutting and Retaining TalentBiz owners are making tough, difficult decisions in these turbulent times. One of the most delicate issues is reducing headcount while simultaneously attempting to retain strategic talent. A recent survey from Deloitte found that the average U.S. company turns over 25% of its workforce yearly. Excessive turnover hurts the bottom line. Some things you can do to attract and retain employees with critical skills even while you're restructuring jobs to lower costs: 1) Increase the use of work practices widely seen as perks, like flexible scheduling through telecommuting or reduced work weeks. 2) Communicate constantly with your core talent, through surveys, mentoring and feedback. 3) Realize that long-term incentives like stock options have lost value due to the stock market crash; invest in cash bonuses based on individual, rather than company performance instead. -- Eve Lopez, Associate Editor

Career Outlook for Web Professionals: Still RosyAquent, a talent agency, and Monster, the job site, recently surveyed web professionals and managers working in the online marketing and interactive media fields, and found a surprising trend in a recession: companies have an increased need for interactive designers and developers, and the talent pool is not keeping pace. Why? In today's fast-paced tech world, it's not enough to just be an HTML coder: web developers are expected to be fluent in Web 2.0, usability, design and communications. Access the webcast entitled "Hiring Interactive Talent in the New World of Work" on the American Marketing Association website to learn how to recruit the right kind of web professionals for your business. -- Eve Lopez, Associate Editor
