Hoists
Tips & Advice to help you make your decision on Hoists
Construction companies and manufacturing plants use hoists on a regular basis to help lift and move heavy or bulky items. If your company has a need for hoists, you have to find one that is appropriate for the jobs you need completed.
You must decide on the power source you will use for your hoist. If you are lifting only light loads, a manual hoist may be sufficient; however, if you are lifting heavier loads, consider a pneumatic, hydraulic or electric hoist, as these can accommodate a heavier workload.
Once you know the power source, you will have to decide on the type of hoist mechanism you need. Chain hoists are the most common. In order to find the right one for your needs, you must look at the workload capacity of the hoist and compare it to the heaviest load you will move. Package hoists are ideal for applications where you will not only lift the load, but move it to another location, such as down an assembly line. Consider maximum speed and workload when choosing this type of hoist. Industrial hoists can accommodate the heaviest workload, but they require more space for operation than the other types, so take your layout into consideration.

Hoists
How to choose between chain, package, and built-up hoistsBy Kristina Seleshanko Whether you call it a construction hoist, industrial hoist, or commercial hoist, if you're looking for one, the options may quickly seem overwhelming. There are a huge variety of hoists available for your business. To figure out which one is right for your needs will take some time and consideration.
Before you buy hoists, first decide whether you need a manual, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electric hoist. This is a simple question to answer, since it has to do with what sort of power source you will have available. (Although if you require high capacity, a manual hoist isn't the right choice.) Consider the following:
1. Will simple and basic commercial hoists work best?
2. Do you need a hoist for higher production?
3. Does your hoist need to take the highest capacities and speeds?
Pick a chain hoist for basic needs
A chain hoist is the simplest type of heavy lifting hoist available. The average electric chain hoist has a one-quarter ton to three ton capacity, although some can handle up to 25 tons. There are also ergonomic styles that may be operated with one hand.
Try:
Dearborn Overhead Crane offers a good selection of chain hoists from a variety of manufacturers, including ergonomic styles. Nationwide Industrial Supply carries manual and electric chain hoists, from "ergonomic" to "extreme duty" types.
Choose package industrial hoists for high production
Wire rope hoists are better for heavy use. There are two types: package hoists and build-up hoists. Package hoists are an "integrated package" of proprietary parts used in high production settings needing quarter ton to 30 ton capacities at standard speeds.
Try:
L.K. Goodwin Co. Inc. carries a wide variety of wire rope commercial hoists, including package hoists. Hoists Direct Inc. also sells new and used package hoists.
Pick built-up hoists for heaviest service
Built-up hoists do heavier service than package hoists, and are created to deal with capacities over 30 tons at high speeds. They also work best with long lifts.
Try:
Virginia Crane offers custom built-up hoists that come with a wide variety of accessories. F&G Industries Incorporated also provides custom built-up hoists.
- Ergonomic hoists may be one of the most productive manual hoists available. A study at Rochester Institute of Technology showed workers were 68% more efficient using this type of hoist.
