Guide to Marine Corps Education and Training

Pursue United States Marine training before, during and after enlistment

By R.N. Dolgener, Special Education Teacher

Since 1775, US Marines training has focused primarily on the development of an enlisted individual's physical strength, intellectual prowess and unquestionable character. Today, although opportunities for Marine Corps education have grown to encompass even more scholarship and career advancement, the defining values have not strayed from their original intent.

Marine Corps training for officer candidates can begin at the collegiate level and carry a future Marine through the undergraduate years as he or she prepares to lead others as a Marine officer. Enlisted Marines also enjoy opportunities for Marine Corps Education and Training, and retirees can transition seamlessly into high-powered civilian careers. Anyone looking into Marines training information should consider their current situation and ultimate goal:

1. US Marines basic training for building strength and character in enlisted service

2. Collegiate-level education and training for Marine Corps officer hopefuls

3. Transition training for Marines exiting the service and preparing for a civilian career

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Pursue collegiate-level onsite education and training for Marines

There are four routes through which a prospective or current college student can become a commissioned officer within the USMC: Platoon Leaders Class, Officer Candidates Course, Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps - Marine Option and the United States Naval Academy. Before pursuing these options, however, the Marines require all hopefuls to complete Officer Candidates School, a proving ground for would-be military leaders and the basis of all US Marines' education in leadership.

I recommend: Earn a Marine Corps Reserve education while enrolled in participating colleges through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps, Marine Option. Look into Henley-Putnam Univeristy's online offerings in intelligence, counterterrorism and protection geared to marines.

Complete Marine Corps online training for reservists, active-duty and deployed Marines

Many Marine Corps training classes are simply college courses that are applicable to your current enlisted occupation. Access the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges degree program for the Marine Corps (SOCMAR) member institutions to avoid course duplication, earn the most college credit for your military experience and take advantage of flexible course scheduling all while serving your country -- even through location reassignments.

I recommend: The Marine Corps Community Services website provides valuable information and support to active and retired Marines and their families, including Marine Corps education. Find all the resources you need to begin or continue your education during enlistment using the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) catalog. Find the SOCMAR/Marine Career College Program degree that's right for you, and enroll in an institution that works with Marine Corps families around the world.

Take advantage of the integrated Marines' education and training program from the start

You'll be able to find lots of Marines training information through a local USMC recruiting office. US Marines' basic training certainly addresses classroom training and character education, but culminates in a grueling 54-hour test of physical ability and stamina, aptly called the Crucible.

I recommend: Preview basic Marine Corps training classes using the USMC Parris Island Recruit Training portal. Learn more about US Marines' physical training and testing rigors with the Military.com Fitness Center for the Marine Corps.

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  The US Military also offers substantial support for civilian transitions and Marine Corps education through the GI Bill and the government's Tuition Assistance program. Ask your recruiter or college counselor for the information you need to use your benefits wisely.
