Guide to Military Tanks Education and Training

Train to work with and maintain military tanks

By Terri Deno

Military tank vehicles are some of the most complex vehicles in the world. Not only does a military tank have to be strong, it also has to have the latest technology in order to work on the battlefield to seek and destroy its targets. US military tanks are built to outlast many other tanks produced by foreign governments, and therefore anyone building tanks will need to have special training to maintain the vehicle as well as to operate it.

Training can come from many sources, including the US military and military tank manufacturers. Military tanks education and training will provide you with the skills to:

1. Work for Army tank manufacturers designing, building, and testing tanks.

2. Operate tanks for military exercises and combat.

3. Maintenance techniques for routine maintenance and combat maintenance.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Attend seminars and events to learn more about military tanks for sale

Military tanks for sale are big business for many, whether it is to use them for training exercises, movies, or other types of props. Events with educational workshops and seminars can provide some information on maintaining and operating tanks.

I recommend: US Military Vehicles provides a list of shows that offer educational opportunities for those that want to operate and own military tanks. The Marshall Foundation provides a seminar for Junior ROTC members that covers many topics, including military vehicles and equipment.

Take courses designed for those that build and operate Army tanks

A vital skill for anyone who works with tanks is to know how to operate the machinery. This includes all of the weaponry and technology on board. If you are not in the military, you can still find operations and building training from a variety of defense and civilian programs.

I recommend: The Defense Acquisition University provides many training and certifications for building and working with military tanks. The MOUT Training Program provides training for tank operations in non-war areas.

Train to install equipment and repair a military tank vehicle

Most operators of tanks also know how important it is to have at least basic repair skills for one or more of the systems on a tank. Repair training will teach a person how to replace parts and work on engine components to keep the vehicle in running order.

I recommend: General Dynamics holds major contracts with the U.S. and other governments to train soldiers and civilians on maintaining battle tanks. Central Texas College Europe provides many military training programs that offer installation and repair courses for military vehicles.

Guide to Military Tanks

Fire up business with military tanks

By Tara McClendon, Freelance Writer/Editor, Tara McClendon

Army tank manufacturers work to produce weapons of war that not only hold their own in battle, but also protect the people in them. US armed forces began using military tank vehicles in World War II, and technology continues to advance these vehicles.

A business owner can use army tanks to draw people to his business. Ways to do this include using a military tank as a statue in front of the place of business to attract attention, opening a military tank museum to help people learn more about the vehicles or driving around in a tank with your business name and logo advertised on it. Before you purchase a tank, you might want to:

1. Determine what type of tank you want.

2. Find military tanks for sale.

3. Look for used military tanks for sale.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Evaluate the types of military tanks for sale

While the battle tank is the king of tanks, military tank manufacturers produce a variety of tanks, including 4-wheel, 6-wheel, 8-wheel, battle and light tanks. The sheer size of a tank will draw attention to your business, but you might find you prefer one type of tank over another.

I recommend: MilitaryFactory.com offers a comprehensive list of military tanks. Visitors can search its website by type of tank or by year of tank. Military Vehicle Sales carries a variety of military tanks and offers appraisals for military tanks you might want to buy from other vendors.

Promote your business or make a movie with military tank vehicles

Many military tank vendors specialize in providing tanks for promotional purposes. Depending on your goal, you might need to look outside the US to get an authentic tank from another country. Make sure you understand all the aspects to the transaction before you agree to utilize the services offered by the company.

I recommend: Tanksforsale specializes in exporting tanks from Western countries. The company also specializes in procuring military tanks for businesses for the purpose of advertisement or promotion. USMilitaryVehicles.com provides military vehicles for films and also sells military tanks.

Work with a military tank seller to get what you need

When it comes to buying a military tank, a person probably won't be able to get the latest model due to security purposes. For this reason, most military tank sellers specialized in used tanks. In many cases, tanks available for sale date back to World War II.

I recommend: Idaho Motor Pool, which has an ever-changing inventory, sells military vehicles including tanks. It offers actual photos of the vehicles for sale rather than stock photos. Midwest Military also sells military tanks. Like Idaho Motor Pool, its inventory constantly changes, so if you don't see what you need, contact the company.

Guide to Military Tank Key Terms

Understanding key terms related to military tanks

By Kim Finn

Military tanks serve as a symbol of our country's strength. These critical weapon systems can engage the enemy head-on with large guns while protecting their crews with an armored shell. Whether you work as a subcontractor to the industry or just want to place a tank static display in front of your business to attract attention, you should first understand the basic terminology relevant to military tanks.

This guide focuses on six basic definitions ranging from types of tanks to different tank parts and a primary threat to tanks. Terms include: M1 Abrams, M4 Sherman, tracked vehicle, hull, gun turret and anti-tank guided missile.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

M1 Abrams

First produced in 1978, the M1 is a heavily armored and armed, low-profile and full-tracked land combat weapon system. Designed to directly engage and destroy enemy tanks and other armored fighting vehicles while providing full protection to its four-man crew, the M1 continues serving as the backbone of the U.S. Army.

I recommend: Learn more about the M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank at the Federation of American Scientists/Military Analysis Network website.

M4 Sherman

Like the M1's current status as the U.S. military workhorse on the ground, the M4 fulfilled the same role during WWII for the U.S. and its allies. Roughly 50,000 units of the medium tank were produced during the war.

I recommend: Read more about the M4 at HowStuffWorks.

Tracked vehicle

A tank is a tracked vehicle, meaning it employs large, continuous tracks comprised of joined flat sections made of rigid rubber and metal links. The track system works much like a conveyor belt, and as the tank moves forward, each individual track lays flat on the ground at the front and then gets picked up when it reaches the back. The front and back tracks, as well as those in-between, all work to carry the tank's load. The tank's engine rotates steel sprockets, and the sprockets move the track.

I recommend: View video of the M1 Abrams in action to see how the track system contributes to the tank's ability to navigate quickly across any type of terrain.

Hull

The lower portion of a tank is called the hull. It includes the tank body, engine, transmission and track system.

I recommend: View the hulls of numerous military tanks from different countries at Military Factory. Scroll down to learn more about construction of the Russian tank hull.

Gun turret

The top portion of a tank is the gun turret. The armored structure's purpose is to support weapons such as cannons and large tank guns. The circular turret is located at the hull's center and rotates 360-degrees on modern tanks.

I recommend: Scroll down to the sixth paragraph of the M1 Abrams description at GlobalSecurity.org to gather more information about the M1 gun turret.

Anti-tank guided missile (ATGM)

An anti-tank guided missile is a guided weapon system designed to destroy main battle tanks and other armored fighting vehicles. ATGMs pose a real threat to tanks and can be truck-mounted, man portable or helicopter-mounted.

I recommend: Learn more about ATGMs at Absolute Astronomy. For the latest news in worldwide developments regarding ATGMs, bookmark the Jane's website.

Guide to Military Tanks Types and Styles

Find out this history and use of different military tank vehicles

By Nikki Davis

Military tanks for sale have an enormous impact on the outcome of wars. These artillery vehicles protect soldiers defensively, but also offer an offensive means to strategically turn the tide of a battle. Earning a contract from the government can be a lucrative endeavor for a company as a manufacturer, as can earning a subcontract through one of those manufacturers.

There a handful of military tanks types and styles. Most countries find what works for them and stick with that particular design. Instead of changing models, they instead improve the model that already have and call it a different, updated version. Military tanks can be compared for many features including size, speed, artillery, maneuverability and more. Whatever your reason for comparing military tanks types and styles, learning the difference in vehicles will make you more knowledgeable as a hobbyist or professional.

To find out more about military tanks types and styles:

1. Look at the M1 Abrams US military tanks.

2. Check out the Challenger 2 battle tank.

3. Take a look at the German Leopard 2 military tank.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Find out about M1 Abrams military tank vehicles

M1 Abrams military tank vehicles are the battle tank of choice used by the United States Army.

I recommend: Learn more about the M1 Abrams from Olive-Drab.com. They also have chart listings and histories of a wide variety of other tanks styles as well. EdInformatics.com also has a wide variety of information on the M1 Abrams as well. The site looks at the history, the design, the fire control, ammunition, armour and other protection of the vehicle.

Learn about Challenger 2 military tanks

Challenger 2 military tank vehicles are the main battle tank (MBT) used for the armies of the United Kingdom and Oman. They were built by the British company Vickers Defence Systems, which is now part of BAE Systems Land and Armaments.

I recommend: Military Factory has helpful information on the British military tank vehicle Challenger 2. The ARMOR Site! has additional information on Challenger 2 army tanks. It has a comprehensive history and also discusses the vehicles weaponry systems.

Check out what military tank manufacturers call the Leopard 2

Army tank manufacturers refer to Leopard 2 when talking about German main battle tank developed by Krauss-Maffei. It was developed in the early 1970s, first entered service in 1979, and this vehicle is held in high regard for its mix of firepower, protection and ease of mobility.

I recommend: Find out from Military-Today.com more about the Leopard 2, which is also used by the Canadian military. Their upgrade version of this battle tank is called the Leopard C2 MBT. Military Periscope has information on the Leopard 2 military tank vehicle.
