Guide to Spacecraft Research and Development

Spacecraft research and development is an industry that breaks the barriers of limitation

By Katherine Kay

Spacecraft development firms pursue new products, discoveries and services that are better than yesterday’s. The methodical, consistent process of R&D is also creative, original and investigative. The process helps companies grow and progress in their industry.

Spacecraft research and design uses science, math and engineering techniques to make new spacecraft products, devices, equipment and parts. Most companies spend about 5% of their revenue on research and development. However, companies that work with higher-technology usually spend a lot more. Consider the following when thinking about R&D for your spacecraft research:

1. Find major institutions involved in basic outer space research.

2. Look at applied spacecraft research to bring new products to consumers.

3. Do research and get training in spacecraft development.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Use basic spacecraft research to move society forward

Basics research is the kind of research often pursued by government, education and larger businesses. This kind of research is global and national in that it helps many people not just a company or a corporation.

I recommend: Look to NASA for leading-edge programs in long-term space exploration programs. CalTech has long been a leader in science and discovery. Their spacecraft research includes programs in infrared processing and analysis, laser interferometer gravitation wave observatory, and other fields of space study.

Pursue applied space travel development and research to improve products and services for consumers

Applied research is the kind of research that companies do to improve the bottom line. By doing so, companies grow and progress as they discover and implement improved products.

I recommend: Southwest Research Institute (SWRI) in San Antonio, Texas, performs both applied and basic spacecraft R&D in power systems, data analysis, instrument systems, space support systems and software. ORBITEC offers a solid foundation for small businesses. They have an innovative research program that is a catalyst in technology and product development. Main Space Science Systems also does applied research. SpaceDev is another private company engages in spacecraft research.

Locate the right university for education and research in development of spacecraft

Universities and higher places of learning are one of the best places to find good research and development programs in spacecraft development.

I recommend: Charles W. Smith is a professor teaching and lecturing about advance spacecraft technologies. Purdue University has an excellent educational program for spacecraft research. Go to this site for more information, directories and resources in space advancement.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Governmental, educational and big business high-tech institutions will have funds for basic research. Smaller companies generally do applied research, but the budget is more limited. If you are a smaller company, be sure to talk to a business consultant well-versed in space travel research to find out about how much money your company should apply to research to stay current and competitive. High-tech companies do spend more money on R&D than other industries.
