Forestry training is an individualized process. Choices and options can be almost overwhelming. There are online courses, certifications and degree programs. Then, of course, you can get a forestry degree at a traditional college and university.
The student today needs to look at the equation at a deeper level and ask questions, "Is it the diploma that is important and necessary for my career path?" or, "Do I simply need a rigorous program that will get me in the workforce quickly?" You need to research the same way parents and high school students look for the right college or university. There are plenty of less than sterling online courses out there too. Buyer beware. Consider the following when looking for your forestry classes:
1. Go to an established accredited school for forestry education.
2. Use online forestry classes for your training.
3. Further your forestry knowledge and involvement with associations, societies and guilds.
Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done
Use established colleges and schools for forestry education
Go to an established school for a good education, degree or certification that will hold up under scrutiny. Fully accredited schools will give you something no one can ever take from you.
I recommend: Yale’s Forestry and Environmental Studies program was founded in 1901. The forestry education of Yale covers environmental issues ranging from local to global. For 75 years, CNR at North Carolina State University has been one of the nations’ leaders in natural resource education. Graduates of this institution hold leadership roles as natural resource advocates in both industry and government. Training in forestry at CNR supports three of the five top industries in North Carolina-wood and forest products, paper products and tourism. The natural resources program at the University of Washington was one of the first in the nation. Their College of Forest Resources educates students in forest and resource management, as well as environmental challenges.
Look for a forestry degree and expert guidance online
Most professions have a strong online presence. It is not easy to find an accredited forestry degree online. Forestry and environmental online training is not as prevalent as many other occupations. Talk to experts and educators in the field to find out more.
I recommend: Wildlife and Forestry Conservation at Penn Foster offers a distance-learning program with a career diploma in six months. Some of the subjects that teach are forest ecology and protection, wildlife laws, park and recreation operations and equipment safety. Talk to an expert in the forestry field at Clearwater Forest Consultants and get forestry education questions answered.
Further your education in forestry with forest guilds, associations and societies
Look at these resources, and define your needs and goals to find the right benefits and resources for your small-business.
I recommend: Find out what the Association of Consulting Foresters of America offers in networking opportunities to foresters. See how the Society of American Foresters can help answer your forestry questions. Look to the affiliates and stewards in the Forest Guild association for more forestry advice.

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide
- • Training programs and schools have popped up all over the Internet. It's a great opportunity for convenient online forestry classes. However, watch the fine print. Look at the testimonials. Check Better Business Bureaus. Compare prices. Make sure the school is not too expensive compared to other schools, and that it offers a good solid program.
