Guide to Forestry Publications

Improve your knowledge and success by reading forestry publications

By Kim Finn

Keep up with your continuing professional development by reading a forest publication whenever you get the chance. Reading and learning from forestry publications and then applying what you've learned will help you better yourself, your business, the environment and your clients.

Forestry publications provide great resources for new industry trends, technologies, best practices, news and advice. As you search for publications about forestry, consider the following resources:

1. Buy forestry books that build on the foundation of knowledge you already own or introduce a fresh perspective to an old idea.

2. Stay current on trends, news and events by reading forestry magazines.

3. Rely on forestry journals for in-depth knowledge of specific aspects of the industry.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Read a forestry book to broaden your horizons

Forestry books make smart reference additions to your reference library that you can pull off the shelf and thumb through for information any time.

I recommend: Purchase the book Wildlife, Forests and Forestry: Principles of Managing Forests for Biological Diversity, by Malcolm Hunter, to learn more about the interface between forestry and wildlife. For forest service publications, start with the book Forest Service and the Greatest Good: A Centennial History. Published in 2006, the book shares with readers the history of America's oldest and largest federal land management agency.

Add a forestry publication like a magazine to the list of resources at your fingertips.

Look for pertinent articles that include current news, trends, events, industry forecasts and editorials in forestry and forest magazines.

I recommend: For the photography alone you'll consider a subscription to Evergreen, the most widely read forestry magazine. Within its pages you'll read information, analyses and perspectives on issues impacting forests, forestry, forest communities and the forest products industry. Order Forest Magazine, a quarterly magazine published by Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics.

Rely on forestry journals for research

Take advantage of journals with in-depth, researched forestry articles when you need detailed information for research or continuing professional education.

I recommend: Purchase your subscription to the Journal of Forestry, the most widely circulated professional forestry journal in the world. The publication strives to keep forestry professionals informed about all aspects of forestry, to include economics, education and communication, entomology/pathology, fire, forest ecology, geospatial technologies, history soils and hydrology. You can also find forestry journals that focus on specific regions. For example, check out the Northern Journal of Applied Forestry, a quarterly publication that covers northeastern, midwestern and boreal forests in the U.S. and Canada. Subscribe to the Journal of Forestry Research if you possess an interest in original theoretical and experimental research. Roughly 85% of the papers published in this international journal of forest research come from Chinese academics, students and scientists. Check out the Journal of Sustainable Forestry for a broad range of in-depth research papers encompassing biotechnology, physiology, silviculture, wood science, economics and forest management.
