Calceed Co., Ltd. was first founded in 1919 in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, an area known for its rich reserve of high quality lime. The company was incorporated in 1941 and became publicly held in August 1994. The company is one of the biggest lime manufacturers in Japan, with eight lime kilns in the Yamaguchi Plant and four in the Chiba Plant. The company manufactures quicklime, calcium carbonate, hydrated lime and other inorganic chemicals. Quicklime accounted for 69% of fiscal 1997 revenues; slaked lime, 16%; calcium carbonate, 5%; soil solidifiers, 5%; desulfurizing agents, 1% and other, 4%. Sales to Ube Chemical Ind. Co., Ltd. and Kawasho Corporation, a steel-specialized trader, accounted for 15.9% and 9.8% of fiscal 1997 revenues respectively. Ube Industries, Ltd., a comprehensive manufacturer of chemicals, cement, machinery and industrial plants, and Ube Chemical Ind. Co., Ltd. are the major shareholders with 37.60% and 28.40% of issued stock respectively. The company merged with Ube Chemical Ind. Co., Ltd. on April 1 1997.
