Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Research which devices are classified as networking hardware

Networking hardware is defined as any device that facilitates the use of a computer network. These devices can include access points, gateways, routers, hubs, interface cards, modems, firewalls and adapters. In addition to communicating between devices within your network, networking accessories are also required to transmit data. Common networking hardware for data transmission include storage areas, file and database servers and specific network devices. As a result of advanced technology, there are always more devices viewed as network endpoints, including mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

I recommend: Read more about network accessories and what constitutes a network by visiting Hardware Central. You can also visit Microsoft to learn more about the functionality of network hardware and accessories and understand the basic pros and cons of these devices.

Compare wired and wireless networking accessories

Because you can use copper-based Ethernet adapters with most modern computers, they are the most widely used computer network hardware. Thus, the reason that wireless networking hardware has gained popularity. Guide to Networking Hardware

Wi-Fi technology and network-ready computers simplify networking hardware requirements

By Judy Artunian, Freelance Writer

Computer network hardware can make employees more productive by allowing them to share data and collaborate in real time. To create what’s called a local area network (LAN), equipment needs are minimal. In fact, only a few networking hardware devices are required to connect your office computers on a LAN. If that LAN is wireless, you can enjoy the added bonus of linking your computing devices without cumbersome cables.

A few points to keep in mind about networking hardware:

  1. Wi-Fi, which converts Internet signals into radio waves that have a range of about 120 ft., is a convenient way to establish a wireless network because it requires minimal networking equipment.
  2. A disadvantage of going wireless is that the network’s transmission can be interrupted by walls, radio interference and other obstacles. That isn’t a problem with wired networking hardware.
  3. Before investing in networking equipment, consider how your network might grow. Project the number of network clients (the computing devices that use the network) you’ll need a year from now.

Wireless network hardware

Want a wireless network? Hardware requirements are minimal as are the number of networking accessories you'll need. If you already have a broadband Internet connection, all you need is a wireless router and computers that include network adapters. Wireless network hardware is available to support several different wireless networking technologies. 802.11g is considered the most versatile because it's compatible with most equipment.

I recommend: A wireless router converts the signal from your Internet connection to a signal that is readable by your network. NETGEAR offers a variety of high-performance wireless routers. CNET rates wireless network routers. Most of today’s desktop and laptop computers include wireless network adapters that let them link to a network. But you can buy devices that let you retrofit an older desktop or laptop. Newegg.com has a wide selection networking accessories.

Wired networking hardware

LANs with computers that are linked by cables are still the way to go for companies that don't want to deal with the limitations imposed by wireless networks. For a wired computer network, hardware necessities include network adapters for your computers, and Ethernet cables to connect the devices on your network.

I recommend: If you need to add a network adapter or other networking accessories to a computer, consult TigerDirect.com. You’ll find plenty of cable assembly packages and other networking accessories at GlobalSpec.

Be server savvy when picking network equipment

Servers are a critical piece of networking hardware because they are computer systems that are shared by the computers on your network. A server can contain documents and software applications that employees share. It can also perform important tasks, such system-wide back-ups. Before selecting your server network equipment, decide which server operating system you want to use.

I recommend: If you want to equip a small network with basic file and printer sharing capabilities, a server such as Dell’s Power Edge 1900 can do the job. For larger networks and more advanced features, consider servers such as those in IBM’s System i line. Apple’s XServe features the Mac OS X Server, which is a UNIX-based operating system that is compatible with Windows and other operating systems.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Before opting for wireless network hardware, look around your office space for obstacles that could get in the way of the wireless signals. For example, metal doors and blinds, as well as concrete walls, can obstruct the signals. If there are too many obstacles, investigate wired networking equipment.
  • •  Don't wait for someone to report a network malfunction. Keep the network running efficiently by testing for networking hardware and software problems on a regular basis.
  • •  Your networking equipment is only as secure as your security software. Secure your network from hackers and viruses with security measures, such as firewalls and passwords.

Guide to Networking Hardware Education and Training

Save money by training your employees in computer network hardware

By Jamie Belanger, Computer Technician & Marketing, 1-800-905-GEEK (Geeks on Call)

Small businesses can often be hampered by the lack of a dedicated IT department familiar with network hardware and accessories. You can save money on outsourced IT support by making sure one or more of your employees is educated in the installation and support of computer networking hardware.

The following networking hardware education and training resources will help you get started:
  1. Get your employees in-depth training from a network hardware vendor or third-party education facility.
  2. For a minimal investment, enroll your employees in online courses covering networking accessories, setup and troubleshooting.
  3. Make your employees aware of the free resources available online that can further their knowledge of network hardware for computers.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Enroll your employees in specialized courses from networking hardware manufacturers

Some network hardware vendors, like Cisco, offer courses specific to their networking equipment. This type of training isn't meant for beginners to the field. However, if you have an employee with technical aptitude that is planning on taking over all IT and network administration for your company, this type of in-depth training is perfect.

I recommend: Visit the Cisco Systems Networking Academy to get an idea of the types of courses they offer. Cisco offers the gold standard in networking training. For education that isn't tied to an equipment manufacturer, take the A+ Networking course at SK Max. This course covers networking hardware, basic networking tasks, basically everything needed to become knowledgeable in running a small office network.

Get more bang for your buck by signing your employees up for online networking hardware courses

Distance learning courses are one of the more affordable ways to get your employees training in network hardware, setup and administration. One of the benefits is that they can be used by more than one employee, unlike traditional brick and mortar classes.

I recommend: For under $50 you can enroll an employee in the Serebra Learning course on Designing a Small Network. This is one of many networking courses available on their site. LearningSteps.com hosts a distance learning networking training course. You can get full lifetime access to their site for under $30.

Gain easy access to basic networking hardware knowledge with free online tutorials

Although it can be difficult to find exactly what you're looking for, there is a wealth of network hardware resources available on the Internet. Nothing can replace face-to-face instructor time, but if you're just looking to arm your employees with basic networking knowledge, free tutorials will do just fine.

I recommend: Read the free tutorial on networking hardware at the Florida Center for Instructional Technology College of Education. Train Signal offers free video training in the different networking components.
