Guide to Apple Servers

Get information about Apple servers

By B. Lumadue

Apple was established in the 1970s and originally created personal computers with the Apple operating system which has evolved into a line of Apple X servers. Today the company produces servers and consumer electronics in addition to computers.

Apple introduced the Workgroup server line in the 1990s, and later the Macintosh Server G3 and G4. The current Apple Xserve is a powerful server, with a single quad-core processor for its base configuration.

Mac OS X Server is the server operating system used on Apple servers. It's based on UNIX and has an interface that is easy to use and configure. Features of the X Server include iCal Server, Podcast Producer, Open Directory and NetInstall. If you're purchasing a new server, here's some Apple server information to keep in mind:

1. A new or used Apple server can easily be purchased online.

2. Apple servers are easy to repair onsite without the need for training or certification.

3. Apple servers can be upgraded with additional memory, hard drive space and processing power.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Purchase new or used Apple Macintosh servers

New Xserve servers or older Apple server versions are available from online vendors. The current Apple Xserve is available with a single quad-core processor. Available memory is 32GB and hard drive space up to 3TB in a low-profile 1U server. It also features multiple Ethernet, USB and FireWire ports.

I recommend: Purchase new Apple servers directly from the Apple Store or from resellers like CDW or MacMall. You can get used Apple servers with up to a three-year warranty at Gainsaver.

Get support for X servers

Knowing how to troubleshoot and repair your server can save money and frustration. When your server is out of warranty, you'll either need to support it yourself or pay for technical support services.

I recommend: The Apple Support site offers software upgrades, forums, documents and other support features. When additional support is needed, you can find repair locations at the Apple website.

Find repair and upgrade options for Apple X servers

Apple servers are easy to repair and upgrade. Swap failing parts right in your office, or upgrade memory, drives and processors to create a more powerful server.

I recommend: Apple provides parts kits that make it easy to swap parts without training or certification, and technicians are available by phone to help you make repairs and troubleshoot. Another source for repair and upgrade options is DV Warehouse, which has a wide selection of Apple compatible parts. Crucial offers memory that is guaranteed to be compatible.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  While the Apple X server operating system is easy to manage and configure, there is a learning curve for users that are only familiar with Windows interfaces.
  • •  Find out about warranty and return options before purchasing an Apple server or parts from an online retailer. You may be liable for the cost of shipping or a restocking fee.
