Guide to Computer Repair For Home & Office
where to get help, how to not overpay, DIY saves you boat loads of cashAction Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done
Don't Panic
In most cases even if your computer smells like it is on fire your data will be safe, and it can be fixed. In over a decade of computer repair I have literally only seen 1 or 2 computers that were totally dead and that was due to lightning. A big key is once you start noticing a problem, do some research to find out what is going on and most importantly what lies ahead. You can nip a lot of issues in the bud ahead of time if you can notice the warning signs.
I recommend:
Go out to the web, if possible and do a little research about the problem and see what some likely causes are. There are tons of great sites out there if you can sift through all the ones just trying to sell you stuff. The site I run on is focused on PC Repair is is called Be Your Own IT, catchy huh? There are other great sites like PC Tech Bytes and Computer Hope
Deal With It Now
If you are noticing something weird going on with your computer, just like with your car, make sure to look into it right away. Small issues eventually grow to be larger more expensive ones to fix. If you notice the fan on the back of your PC stopped spinning, fix it before the power supply overheats and fries your system board.
I recommend:
Ask Around, visit website like Be Your Own IT to learn more about what your looking at.
Locate A Reliable Computer Repair Technician
If this is for business, you very likely already have one. If this is for home use then this might be the first time. There always seems to be an endless market of people who know people who know how to fix computers. This can save you a lot of money but keep in mind, do you know this person? What is their reputation in the business? Will they read through your personal information and such? Also will they warranty their work or be there if they wreck your computer while trying to fix it? Likely not. I agree most computer repair shops charge way too much and have rookie high school kids doing the work like Geek Squad and others but at least they can stand behind their work.
I recommend:
Try to poll other businesses in the area on who they use, referrals are a very powerful thing. I ran my own business for 10+ years and never did a lick of advertising. Remember good news spreads, bad news spreads 10X as fast so if a technician has a rep either good or bad you should be able to figure it out pretty quick.
Dont Fear DIY
Don't be afraid to try to fix it yourself. Computers are not as mysterious as local computer repair shops would like you to think. Most repairs take less than an hour, so if an hour of your time is worth hundreds of dollars maybe just take that PC right in, however if it's not and especially if your a small business owner or a home user you can save a lot of money fixing the small things.
I recommend:
watch videos on pc repair there are thousands of great videos out there that walk you right through most repairs. Also check Youtube
there are even more computer repairs videos on there than I could shake a stick at. Also hit computer repair forums, all of the above mentioned sites have them and they are a great way to get free computer repair advice.
Perform routine key maintenance and avoid unnecessary computer repairs
This is key in the prevention of further issues. Keeping a good virus scanning program like AVG which is free for home users and very affordable for businesses is great. You may also want to run at least some spyware protection software like spybot or adaware. Keep those updated and scan regularly and you will find you have a lot less issues. Also don't forget keeping your computer itself clean.
I recommend:
Run these free awesome softwares to keep your PC Virus and Spyware Free.
-AVG
-Spybot
-Ad Aware
Keep your computer dust free by cleaning it out once a year or so, don't smoke by it because the tar from cigs binds to literally everything inside causing a multitude of issues and keep up on whats new in the computer repair world by reading blogs like mine located here
