Guide to Gateway 920 Series Servers

Find parts and support for the Gateway 920 server

By B. Lumadue

Gateway 920 series servers were introduced in 2002. The Gateway 920 series tower server was an inexpensive server targeted to small organizations without IT departments. The components included an Intel Pentium 4 or Celeron processor, 128 MB of memory upgradeable to 4 GB, seven drive bays and five PCI slots, some of which were 64-bit slots. The 920 series server was available with SCSI or IDE hard drives, with a maximum hard drive capacity of 120 GB.

It's difficult to find Gateway 920 servers online, but companies that already have one can save money by keeping it running and upgrading it. It supports modern networking and is useful for running printer and file serving and basic applications. To keep your Gateway 920 series server going, you'll need to:

Gateway compliant parts allow you to make minor and major repairs, including replacing the system board.

I recommend: Motherboards are available from Paddlersite and Pinnacle Micro. Alan Computech International carries Gateway motherboards as well as other parts.

Find memory from Gateway 920 series servers suppliers

The Gateway 920 server supports only specific memory modules. It has a base memory of 128 MB that is upgradeable to 4 GB to create powerful processing.

I recommend: Find memory at Memory To Go or MemoryStock. Memory-Up offers Gateway 920 server memory in 256, 512, and 1 GB modules. If you use their Memory Finder tool, the modules you select are guaranteed to work.

Get support for Gateway 920 series servers online

Find resources and information to support your server. Once your server is out of warranty, you'll either need to support it yourself or pay for technical support services. Knowing how to troubleshoot and repair your server can save money and frustration.

I recommend: Gateway offers support documents and answers frequently asked questions on their support website. More advanced support, downloads and phone support for Gateway products are now handled by MPC Computers. You'll need the system serial number to get more information. Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  If you find used Gateway 920 series servers, they're often sold without hard drives, processors or other hardware. You'll need to purchase and configure the necessary parts before using your server.
  • •  Find out about warranty and return options before you buy Gateway 920 series servers or parts from an online retailer. The company may offer very limited warranty options and there may be shipping and restocking fees if you return the items.
