Guide to Cache Memory

Find cache memory information and resources online

By Jamie Belanger, Computer Technician & Marketing, 1-800-905-GEEK (Geeks on Call)

Cache memory is a portion of memory comprised of high-speed SRAM (static RAM) instead of the slower DRAM (dynamic RAM) used for main memory. Memory caching is vital because most of the programs on your computer access the same instructions and data repeatedly. The computer stores as much of this information as possible in the faster SRAM.

There are two types of cache memory in almost every computer system. The Level 1 (L1) cache is an internal cache, and is traditionally built into the processor. The Level 2 (L2) cache is optional, and is usually directly soldered onto the motherboard itself, somewhere between the CPU and the DRAM. The L2 cache feeds the L1 cache. The only way to upgrade the L1 cache is to purchase a processor upgrade. For the rare systems where the L2 cache is placed in a socket on the motherboard, it's replaced as easily as your main memory is replaced. Upgrade your cache with the following options:
  1. Purchase an L2 cache memory upgrade card to increase the performance of your office Macs.
  2. Find cache memory expansion modules to optimize older PCs.
  3. Easily increase the size of your L1 cache memory with a processor upgrade.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Increase productivity by installing L2 cache memory upgrade cards in your office Macs

Macintosh computers that were previously considered to be upgrade challenged can now achieve increased performance with an L2 cache memory upgrade card. There are options for older Power Macs without a processor upgrade slot, as well as the newer G4s.

I recommend: Upgrade your Mac G4 computers with the easy to install Sonnet Encore™/ST G4 processor upgrade card from the cache memory provider Sonnet Technologies. If you want to enhance the performance of your older Power Mac, We Love Macs! stocks the Crescendo G3/L2, which is a plug-and-play processor upgrade card that can be installed into the L2 Cache Slot.

Make the most out of your antiquated PCs by installing a cache memory upgrade

Some older 486 and Pentium motherboards used a cache module format called COASt (Cache on a Stick). COAst modules are inserted into a socket on the motherboard called a CELP (card edge low profile). Check your motherboard documentation to ensure you're purchasing the right module type.

I recommend: Purchase COASt modules at Hard to Find Components. You can also get in touch with Accutek Microcirccuit at the number or email address listed on their website to inquire about purchasing a COASt module directly from their company.

Install a new processor in your computers to upgrade your L1 cache memory

On most modern computers, the L1 cache memory is a part of the CPU, and the L2 cache is directly soldered onto the motherboard. Upgrading your CPU will typically increase your processor speed as well as increasing the size of your L1 cache. As always, consult with the motherboard manual to ensure that you're purchasing a compatible processor.

I recommend: Find any processor at bargain prices on the TigerDirect website. You can buy Intel and AMD CPUs at a 30 percent discount off retail prices at WholesaleCPUs.com.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  In any computer, the processor, main memory, and cache memory work together and depend on each other to achieve the best system performance. If you plan to upgrade your cache memory, consult your PC supplier or the documentation on your motherboard so that you understand your system's limitations and compatibility issues.
