Guide to HP Memory

Upgrade your computer with Hewlett-Packard random access memory (RAM)

By Shannon Ambroson

Whether your Hewlett-Packard computer is new or old, it can become sluggish and difficult to navigate while using multiple programs. Rather than buy a new computer, consider spending money on upgrading it with a new HP memory card.

You can choose, purchase and install the HP RAM yourself or have a computer technician do it for you. The simple process takes little time and saves a lot of money, especially if you have many computers you were considering replacing.

Install new Hewlett-Packard memory in your existing computers to:

1. Make your computers run faster so you and your employees can be more productive and efficient.

2. Upgrade your system to keep up with the graphics-heavy Internet and games of today. Be able to multi-task with Internet browsers, music players, spreadsheets and word processors all with an HP memory upgrade.

3. Save money by making small changes to your existing systems instead of buying all new ones. Be green—recycle and re-use to save the environment and your budget at the same time.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Assess your current computer's HP RAM to see how much you currently have

Determine what type memory is in your computer. You want to make sure the new RAM you buy will be compatible with your computer--the best way to know is to see what you have and get an upgraded version of the same type. I Recommend:

I recommend: Look at the various types of RAM available and choose the one made for your specific model. Open your computer to see the actual RAM or follow Microsoft's directions to find out what type is compatible with your system. In a Windows operating system click the Start button, go to the Control Panel and click on the System icon to find your HP hard drive and memory information.

Decide which type of Hewlett-Packard memory card you need

Once you know which type of memory your computer currently has, decide how much it needs. If your systems use 256, 512 MB, or even 1 GB RAM, consider upgrading to at least 2 to 4 GB. If you want your computer to be current for a while, add the highest amount of RAM your computer and budget allows.

I recommend: Select a memory card for your specific HP computer type. HP makes memory for Pavilion notebooks, Pavilion desktops, business notebooks, workstations and servers as well as other products such as printers and other electronics.

Purchase HP RAM memory online or at a local computer retailer

Call HP at 800-227-8164 to discuss your Hewlett-Packard upgrade, visit computer retailers such as Best Buy and Circuit City or have the memory shipped directly to your business office.

I recommend: Use the HP memory finder or email the customer service desk to ask specific questions before finalizing your order. Visit the Kingston memory website to find deals on HP compatible RAM.

Install your new RAM

You don't have to take your computer in and spend money on having a professional install your Hewlett-Packard memory. With a small screwdriver, good lighting and a clean surface you can learn to install it yourself.

I recommend: Watch how the experts do it before you attempt installing your HP memory card. Visit eHow.com for step-by-step instructions and watch Expert Village videos explaining exactly what you need to do to keep your computer running smoothly. Unplug your computer and be careful not to damage the motherboard when pulling your old RAM out and placing the new RAM into the slot.

Keep your computer healthy, updated and efficient

Adding HP Pavilion memory or Kingston RAM isn't the only way to make your computer run faster. By maintaining your computer, you ensure your business won't have to replace it for a long time. Some other ways to keep your computer healthy is to add an HP hard drive, a new video and sound card, a large energy-efficient widescreen LCD monitor and keep your files and operating system organized and updated.

I recommend: Follow the Hewlett-Packard hard drive maintenance recommendations to keep your computer clean and free of viruses and unnecessary files. Purchase a new hard drive to accommodate your growing number and sizes of files and programs. Download system updates and run your virus scan daily.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Know when to ask for help. If you have many systems or are extremely uncomfortable with installing RAM yourself, ask a computer-savvy friend or pay a computer technician to do it for you.
  • •  Update memory when necessary, and know that often you will have to upgrade other parts of your computer for a large memory card to work. If you have an old operating system and video card, your 4 GB of RAM won't matter. Keep the parts similarly updated for best results.
