Guide to Network Hubs

Get network hubs information

By B. Lumadue

Network hubs are devices used to connect two or more computers, printers and other devices to a local network. A hub contains Ethernet ports. One port is connected to the network and the others connect to devices.

Ethernet hubs are slower and less efficient than network switches. They offer only half duplex and simple negotiating, so a device can only send or receive at one time. Nevertheless, using a network hub is a simple and inexpensive way to connect devices in one location to the network without running additional network cabling. Some things to consider before purchasing a network hub are:

1. Use serial hubs or USB hubs to share serial and USB devices on your network.

2. Choose a network hub with the number of ports and the connection speed that you need.

3. Consider purchasing a used network port to save money.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Find a network hubs provider

Network hubs are available in various sizes, from two to eight ports. Most modern hubs operate at 10/100 Mbps and connect at the speed of the network device. Browse online to get an idea of what is offered in network hubs. List your port and speed requirements to find the hub meets your needs.

I recommend: CDW features hubs from Belkin, 3Com, and other manufacturers. They include 10Base-T and high-speed 10/100 Mbps Ethernet hubs. Newegg carries hubs with up to seven Ethernet ports.

Consider used network computer hubs

Network hubs are generally inexpensive. But if your budget is very limited, consider purchasing a used network hub for more savings.

I recommend: Tempest Telecom Solutions provides a wide selection of used and refurbished network hubs from major manufacturers. They also provide network services and support. Bizi Networks, a division of Bizi International, has a selection of more than 50 used network hubs. RecycledGoods refurbishes used network and office equipment.

Find serial hubs

A serial hub can be used to add serial devices, like printers and point of sale equipment, to your network. Some USB hubs can be used to connect USB devices to the network.

I recommend: Comtrol RocketPort serial hubs can be used to add four-to-eight RS-232 serial ports to your network through a USB interface. Super Warehouse features hubs from Comtrol, Aten, Avocent and other manufacturers. The AnywhereUSB from Digi International is a network-enabled USB hub that connects USB devices directly to a network without using a local PC.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Network hubs are convenient and inexpensive for small offices and sharing network devices in one location. However, as your network grows, upgrade to network switches to keep your LAN running smoothly.
  • •  Keep distance limitations in mind when connecting a network hub. The distance from a device to a hub is limited to 320 feet. The maximum distance between two hubs is 16 feet.
