Guide to Intel Penryn

Find Intel Penryn information and resources online

By Jamie Belanger, Computer Technician & Marketing, 1-800-905-GEEK (Geeks on Call)

The Intel Penryn processor is the successor to the Merom core--originally used in Core 2 Duo processors. On January 6, 2008, Intel released the new 45 nanometer Penryn-based Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors. The Penryn will eventually be replaced by the Nehalem processor, but can currently be found in desktops, laptops and servers (as the Xeon 5400 series of processors). Intel also released an Apple-only version of the processor in April of 2008.

Familiarize yourself with the Penryn processor family by consulting the following Intel Penryn list of resources:
  1. Get the scoop on the Intel Penryn with informative news releases.
  2. Visit user forums for a "users' eye view" on the Intel Penryn processor.
  3. Purchase a Penryn-based CPU from a wholesale Intel Penryn provider.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Read informative news articles about the Intel Penryn processor family

Near the end of 2007, Intel launched 15 server chips and a new Core 2 Extreme desktop processor. Intel Penryn chips for mainstream desktops and notebooks launched in the first quarter of 2008. Read the news releases about the Penryn processor family to find out why this is bad news for AMD!

I recommend: Check out the Intel news release on the Penryn processor--also downloadable in PDF format for easier reading. CNet has published an excellent article that describes what's best about the new Penryn processors in layman's terms.

Get hard to find Intel Penryn info by visiting user forums

User forums are one of the best ways to get ground-level information about a product. You can learn a lot about the pros and cons of a product from current users.

I recommend: Shogun Interactive Development hosts the Overclock.net forum. They have an Information and Discussion thread dedicated to the Intel Penryn processor. There is a wealth of information available here, including benchmarks, specs and pricing, and recent reviews. You can also check out the latest Penryn discussion threads and topics on ZDnet.

Buy cheap Intel Penryn chips from online retailers

Once you've read up on the latest, you can purchase Intel Penryn chips at a discount from several online retailers. Processor kits usually include the chip itself, as well as thermal paste. Any time you install a new processor, always make sure you add a new layer of thermal paste. This protects your investment by preventing CPU overheating.

I recommend: Directron.com has great deals on all 45 nm Intel Penryn processors. You can also find Penryn-based processors on TigerDirect, although quantity and variety varies.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Always check the documentation for your motherboard to ensure that the Intel Penryn is a supported processor. If you ordered your office computer from one of the major retailers, like Dell, Toshiba or Sony, you will be able to find documentation for your computer online.
