Ocean thermal energy conversion, also known as OTEC, is a promising form of renewable energy. Oceanic thermal energy is created when the heat stored in ocean water is used to generate electricity. The process works best when the upper layer of the ocean water is at least 36 degrees warmer than the lower, deeper layer. Because of this, optimal conditions for renewable energy from the deep ocean exist in tropical waters.
Ocean thermal power can be created with one of three types of systems: closed-cycle, open-cycle or a combination of the closed-cycle and open-cycle systems. Either way, ocean thermal alternative energy requires a large diameter pipe, submerged more than a mile into the ocean, to bring cold water to the surface. This is one of the engineering challenges that currently makes the process difficult and costly.
Before your company gets involved with ocean thermal alternative energy, consider taking the following steps:
1. Learn as much as you can about the ocean thermal energy conversion process.
2. Find programs that promote renewable ocean energy.
3. Research companies that are already in the business of ocean thermal power.
Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done
Contact groups that research ocean thermal energy conversion
A number of groups are dedicated to advancing the cause of renewable energy, and research is currently underway to find ways to make OTEC easier and cheaper.
I recommend: The Minerals Management Service of the United States Department of the Interior is investigating the possibility of OTEC in waters off the United States. On the left-hand side of the webpage, you can subscribe to its news service to receive updates and announcements. The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority has been recognized as one of the world's best test facilities for renewable ocean thermal energy.
Take advantage of government programs that promote ocean thermal renewable energy
Like other forms of renewable energy, ocean thermal renewable energy enjoys growing support in the current political climate. This means there are an increasing number of government programs to assist with projects related to OTEC.
I recommend: Massachusetts Technology Collaborative has a series of programs designed to foster growth in the renewable energy industry. The State of Hawaii is the site of most major OTEC experiments in the United States and maintains a website with a wealth of resources related to renewable ocean energy projects.
Visit companies that are already in the business of ocean thermal energy
A growing number of companies are making a splash in the world of ocean thermal alternative energy. So before you dive in, you may want to consult with current industry leaders.
I recommend: Sea Solar Power is a company that develops and tests elements of OTEC plants. Ocean Engineering & Energy Systems has been involved in OTEC for nearly 25 years. The left side of the webpage provides information about company executives.
