Badenwerk AG, founded in 1921 and publicly traded since 1973, generates and distributes electricity and natural gas in the federal state of Baden- Wuerttemberg. Badenwerk also operates refuse incineration plants, district steam heating systems and a cable television network which had 33,253 clients at the end of 1996. In 1996 the company distributed 51.5% of its electricity to special-contract customers and end-users, while 48.5% was sold to its 826,043 tariff customers. Badenwerk has domestic subsidiaries as well as subsidiaries in Switzerland, Great Britain, France, The Netherlands, Ireland, South Africa, Chile, Singapore and US. The company intends to combine its business force with various partners to achieve further concentration and a strong position at the European market.
