Guide to Natural Gas Organizations

Broaden your business exposure through natural gas organizations

By Linda C. Ray

Natural gas associations offer a slew of opportunities to put your business in position to receive positive recognition and increase sales. In addition to the members of the natural gas council who work within the industry in some capacity, you will have opportunities to meet and get to know other natural gas association members, including those in businesses that support the industry.

Affiliation with natural gas groups provides lobbying and networking opportunities that can be immensely helpful to your own business interests while you support the industry. Membership in natural gas councils often means access to information and contacts that can be important to your own company. Regional natural gas professional organizations offer even more opportunities to network with local business and industry leaders in your community. Approach your membership in gas organizations from a variety of perspectives.

1. Expand your network through natural gas industry organizations

2. Support the industry by participating in natural gas associations

3. Stay informed with natural gas association publications

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Develop business contacts in natural gas groups

Natural gas organizations hold regular meetings, seminars and conventions for members and interested parties. At natural gas council events, as well as through various committees in which you can participate, you will have numerous occasions to socialize and network with other business people who support and work within and for the natural gas industry. The business leaders you meet could offer a number of trade opportunities for you and your company.

I recommend: The American Public Gas Association is one of the largest natural gas associations that most in the industry support. The Center for the Advancement of Energy Markets is a professional group that supports the competitive energy development and marketing.

Demonstrate your interest by joining natural gas professional organizations

If you want to do business with natural gas professionals in any kind of capacity, you will want to show your support while building relationships with national and local leaders in the industry. You often can do this best by participating in natural gas associations with both your presence and your financial support.

I recommend: The Energy Bar Association reaches out to lawyers who work within the industry. Members of the Gas Processors Association produce, transfer, gather and market natural gas. The natural gas group offers a number of opportunities to work within the membership to expand your industry connections.

Keep your company in the loop with publications from natural gas industry organizations

While you may not have time to participate in a trade group or volunteer on a committee, you can take advantage of membership in natural gas groups through the myriad publications they put out. By keeping up with the reports and news in the industry, you can pick and choose which events will be most beneficial for you to attend while keeping updated on changes or news that affects natural gas professional organizations.

I recommend: At the Alliance to Save Energy, you can receive reports and news affecting the industry while finding out about regional and national events. A great group for engineers to keep in touch with others in the natural gas organization through a plethora of publications and job boards is the Association of Energy Engineers.
