Guide to Firefighting

Outfitting your unit with the appropriate firefighting gear

When facing a raging fire, it's necessary to have the appropriate firefighting tools whether that be equipment on hand or the proper training to fight back. When selecting new equipment, evaluate your needs for the routine responses but don't leave out the possibility of an extraordinary situation.

Fire rescue may require more specific equipment such as extrication, water rescue or hazardous materials equipment. Also be aware that unit members must be trained on new equipment. In order to fully utilize the latest technological equipment, you must invest in training time to make sure it is used safely and in a productive manner.

There are a number of factors to consider whether you are replacing existing equipment or purchasing something entirely new. Keep the following guidelines in mind:

1. Make sure the fire equipment meets National Fire Protection Association standards.

2. With all the equipment that makes up firefighting services, make sure the equipment you are considering has a place to fit on the apparatus.

3. Check to see if new equipment will be consistent and work well with existing firefighting supplies.

Action Steps

The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Find the firefighting equipment to protect your unit The proper tool can make the difference between life or death in certain fire situations. Make sure you are stocked with the basic elements for safety before purchasing other equipment. Also be mindful of not duplicating tools that may already be available to you.

I recommend:  Firefighting foam and other extinguishers as well as apparel are manufactured by DuPont. National Fire Fighter Corp. offers a variety of firefighting equipment and tools including axes and shovels.

Sign up for ongoing firefighter training To be fully prepared, firefighters must train in conditions as close to an actual emergency as possible. That includes using the proper equipment for the training simulation as well. Training can also be implemented as different methods of firefighting are introduced as well as different building types.

I recommend:  PennWell Corp. offers simulations, drills, webcasts, books, conferences and events, as well as links and discussion. Browse through the courses offered through Fire Department Training Network.

Educate yourself on fire protection systems As a firefighter, part of your job may be educating the public on fire prevention methods. There are many different systems you can recommend to protect homes and businesses. Be knowledgeable on what kind of systems are on the market so you can effectively answer questions and consult wisely.

I recommend:  From portable extinguishers to industrial fire suppression systems, check out the products offered by Ansul Inc. Western States Fire Protection Company provides fire sprinkler and suppression systems.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide
  • The best way to keep firefighting tools in good working order is to keep them properly maintained. Most equipment requires some sort of upkeep whether its a thorough cleaning, keeping a battery charged or similar activities.
