Guide to Making the Most of Banker Education and Training

Get ahead by making the most of banker education and training

By Linda C. Ray

Banker education and training can give you a variety of skill sets to advance your career. Whether you are looking to get your foot in the door and are just starting out or you are ready to move into management, banking classes can provide training programs for bankers to help you succeed. Through courses in banking, you can get those valuable certificates that will help you move into a more profitable position within your current company or in a new operation or maybe even go into business for yourself.

Online banking classes allow you to stay in your current position and take courses in banking when your schedule permits. Add banking class certification courses to your resume when they are earned. Ask your current employer to pay for banking training classes that will help you advance within the company. There are a number of ways in which you should be making the most of banker education and training.

1. Get your first job with a banking education

2. Use banking courses to add specialties to your resume

3. Advance in your career with banking seminars

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Find entry-level banking classes

Get into the business with the most basic technical training so that you can add experience to your resume that will help you move up in your career. Most advanced training courses for bankers require that you've got the basics down anyway. Employers look at both training and experience to see if you are making the most of your education and training.

I recommend: Many bankers start out as tellers and while you can start in this entry-level position at some banks with no special training, a teller certificate from the American Bankers Association assures you will rank higher than other applicants. Get a Bachelor of Business Administration with a focus on Banking from a number of accredited online universities that you can find links to at the Education Portal.

Add banking seminars to your resume

Especially once you've added a few years of the on-the-job experience to your resume, you should consider upgrading your skills with specialized training so that you can expand your field of expertise and earn more money. Advanced certificates will add up and bring you a greater level of success in your career.

I recommend: Lorman Education Services offers a number of seminars online, by teleconferencing and through local training centers. Expand your skills with seminars that focus on everything from regulatory changes to loan servicing and mortgage foreclosures. Move into other areas of banking such as those that deal with legal financial issues by taking seminars from the Bankers’ Compliance Group.

Move up with bank training courses

One way of moving up into management is to get an advanced business degree. You also can get specialized courses in banking or get into teaching with advanced banking degrees. Make the most of your banker education and training to get you into management, sales and other high-paying jobs in the industry.

I recommend: Earn a Masters of Science in Banking and Financial Services Management online from Boston University to really make the most of your experience and education and find a more rewarding career. Find a number of various banking certificate programs that will help you advance through the online offerings of Florida International University.

Guide to Banker Education and Training for Tellers

Keep your teller's education current so they provide better service to your customers

By Eisla Sebastian

Banking courses help bank tellers better play their important role as the face, voice and hands of a bank. Banking classes in customer service, security and money handling can be offered to tellers as:

1. In-house banker education and training programs.
2. Online banking classes.
3. Seminar style banking courses.

Banker education and training classes are used to educate new employees about the bank’s protocols, rules and expectations. They can also be used as functional training courses for bankers and tellers. When setting up these on-site banking courses you will want to develop a standardized curriculum that all tellers must complete in order to work for you.

When selecting online banking education programs or banking seminars for your tellers make sure you follow these steps:

1. Select a banking seminar that makes sense for your tellers' job description.
2. Select a delivery method that is practical for your bank.
3. Select banking classes for your tellers that are within your bank's employee education budget.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Identify banking courses that deal with money handling

One of the primary duties of a bank teller is money handling. Therefore, your tellers need to have at least a basic course in money handling.

I recommend: Both Renton Technical College and BVS offer online courses for bank tellers on a variety of topics including money handling and customer service.

Protect your staff with a banking seminar in security issues for banks

Security is a huge issue now with all financial institutions. Since your tellers are on the front line, so to speak, they need to know how to handle dangerous situations, as well as how to handle document security issues.

I recommend: Bank Security Training is a DVD course that can help you to meet FDIC Regulation 326. The National Association for Bank Security offers off-site seminars, computer courses and on-site training seminars.

Enroll your tellers in banking seminars for customer service

Customer service is a key skill that tellers need to develop. Fortunately there are a lot of great, low cost customer service courses and seminars they can take.

I recommend: The American Management Association offers a well-respected course in customer services, as does the Independent Community Bankers of America.

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

By Linda C. Ray

Banking education is always in demand for those looking to break into the banking industry with banking training classes and others wanting to advance their careers with banking seminars. Look for training programs for bankers to get a hands-on bank training course or keep up with the latest banking classes online. Find courses in banking on banker education and training websites and through trade associations. Subscribe to banking seminar newsletters and publications to stay on top of the latest bank training courses. Find a number of ways to learn about the banking education industry.

1. Find the leading training programs for bankers

2. Look for online training for bankers

3. Investigate banking seminars through trade associations

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Stick with accredited banking training classes

New banking schools are opening regularly who claim to offer the best education and training for bankers. Some banking education sites make promises that may be difficult to uphold. You should shop around and consider how long a company has been providing bank training. Ask for references and call them. Inquire among your peers about the various banking courses they have taken.

I recommend: Bankers Academy has been providing ABA accredited bank training for more than 20 years. You can take classes online or set up in-house training at your business. The College for Financial Planning is a good resource fro finding out about advanced classes, master degree programs and training in other financial fields to round out your skill set.

Get certificates through online bank training courses

Make sure the degrees and certificates your receive online are welcomed by employers. Look for industry stamps of approval and expect to pay for your certifications. Free offers can help with the tests you'll have to take, but legitimate certification offers require work and fees. Take advantage of the free demos and study sites to assist with your online learning.

I recommend: The Bank Training Center offers a number of Accredited Investment Fiduciary certificate courses online to get your those credentials that will round out your education. Find more than 450 online banking accreditation courses at Bankers Edge. You can take these courses through the Internet, purchase CDs or even bring them into your business for employees through an Intranet platform.

Take banking seminars from the pros

While you are looking to advance your career through banking training classes, you also should be cultivating industry relationships that can help you advance. Those same connections can offer you valuable information and direction as your collect the resources for your banker education and training industry overview.

I recommend: Find many opportunities to network while improving your education through the American Bankers Association. You can get in touch with the latest industry standards and certifications through this popular industry trade group as well. The American Association of Bank Directors is a great place to go for advanced degrees and training after you’ve been in the business for a while and are looking for new challenges.

Guide to Banker Education and Training Key Terms

Banker education and training key terms can ring cha-ching for your career

By Geraldine McGowan

Banker education and training key terms can help you understand the level of education you will be receiving and also help you identify the best education for your career. There are many kind of professional programs out there, and not all are legitimate. You can enhance your career by taking seminars, courses and training. You do not want to go to a fly-by-night place for a certificate that's meaningless. Taking your cue from these key terms can help you choose the right program.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Bank teller training

Bank teller training results in acquiring a certificate from an institution that is part of the banking industry. Usually the training focuses on teller compliance, customer relationships, business practices and other more general aspects of the banking industry. Bank tellers are required to have at least a high-school education.

I recommend: The American Bankers Association (ABA) provides good examples for bank teller training.

Professional certification

Professional certification shows that a person is qualified to perform a function or job. Certification programs in banking run from high to low-there are certification programs for bank vice presidents, managers and tellers (as seen above).

I recommend: The University of the Pacific's certification program for banking executives is concerned with leadership and management. The benefits of certification is explained here. Its 8-class curriculum is an example of the breadth and depth of most certification programs.

Banking seminars

A seminar is defined as a meeting to discuss ideas or a course for advanced students. Banking seminars can be on any number of banking topics and at any range of educational levels. These do not have to be affiliated with the banking or financial industry or with an educational institution.

I recommend: Banking seminars abound. An explanation of different kinds of seminars can be found at Illinois State Banking Association.

Accredited bank training courses

The word 'accredited' in accredited bank training courses, refers to the institution providing the training. Accredited educational institutions have satisfied the U.S. Secretary of Education regarding the quality of their post-secondary education programs. Receiving training from an accredited institution suggests a higher quality of training.

I recommend: Examples of the different meanings for accredited are found at the Institute of Certified Bankers and Harvard Business School, which is an accredited educational institution.

Banking trade associations

There are 19 banking trade associations in the US. Trade associations are organizations that are funded by the businesses operating in a specific industry. Trade associations often lobby for their own benefit but they are also good educational resources. Most banking trade associations provide some kind of professional development. These can offer practical--straight from the horse's mouth--kinds of education and training.

I recommend: Consumer Bankers Association regularly schedules webinars.

MBA

An MBA-a Master's in Business Administration-is one of the best kinds of education you can get for a career in banking. MBA programs are designed for specific professions.

I recommend: The MBA program guide describes what a Master's in Business Administration degree is and lists the different banking specialties in which you can get an MBA.
