Allied Zurich PLC is a financial holding company. The company is 43% owned by Swiss Zurich Financial Services Group which is trading on the London stock exchange. Zurich Financial Services was formed in September 1998 through the merger of Zuerich Versicherungsgesellschaft (Zurich Group) and the financial services business of B.A.T. Industries (UK). Zurich Financial Services is the holding of a globally operating group of companies active in the fields of life, non-life and re-insurance as well as asset management. The company provides its services to 35 million customers in 64 countries through over 350 strategic business units. The remaining 57% of Zurich Financial Services is owned by Zurich Allied AG (Switzerland). Zurich Financial Services itself is a non-trading company, whereas Zurich Allied AG is trading on the Swiss exchange, and Allied Zurich plc on the London stock market, both since September 1998. This dual listing structure enables Swiss and UK shareholders to hold their interests in the Zurich Financial Services Group in their respective local currency. Zurich Financial Services has worldwide subsidiaries. Premium income accounted for 60% of 1999 revenues; investment income, 16%; gain/loss on disposal of securities, 12% and other operating income, 12%.
