Erste Kulmbacher Actienbrauerei AG (EKU), founded in 1872, brews and sells brand name lager beer under its own name. The company's core geographic markets are located in the federal states of Bavaria, Thueringen, Sachsen and Sachsen-Anhalt. EKU has operational subsidiaries in Germany, including Hofer Bierbrauerei AG, Brauhaus Amberg AG and Kulmbacher Unima Malzfabrik GmbH. The company also has non-operational subsidiaries in Austria and the United States. In fiscal 1994 EKU sold its majority stake in the brewery Tucher Braeu AG as well as the distribution activities of its subsidiary Getraenke Pfleghardt GmbH.
