Sunkus & Associates Inc. was established in 1980 as Sunkus Co., Ltd. as a subsidiary of Nagasakiya Co., Ltd., a general merchandise store chain operator. In 1991 the company changed to its present name. Nagasakiya's shares in the company were sold to the Ono Group in 1994, became publicly held in September 1997 and is now a member of the Uny Group. The company is one of Japan's leading convenience store operators with a total of 2,370 Sunkus stores throughout Japan, including those operated by area franchisers as of February 28, 1999. Franchise commission from franchised stores accounted for 84% of fiscal 1999 revenues; net sales of company-owned stores, 15% and other, 1%. Circle K Japan Co., Ltd., a convenience store chain operator, and Uny Co., Ltd., a supermarket chain operator, are the major shareholders with 25.54% and 25.53% of issued stock respectively.
