ASKO Deutsche Kaufhaus AG (ASKO), founded in 1880, is a diversified retailing group with outlets mainly throughout Germany, as well as in surrounding countries. In 1995, three quarters of the 167 new stores where located in East Germany. ASKO operated 1018 food retail outlets/wholesale outlets at the end of fiscal 1995 (297 discount markets, 443 supermarkets, 253 non-food consumer goods markets and 25 cash & carry wholesale markets). In addition, the company operated 166 self-service discount department stores ("real,-"), 181 DIY centers ("Praktiker"), 106 furniture & home products markets ("UNGER") and 80 apparel stores ("Adler") at the end of fiscal 1995. ASKO's major subsidiaries are located in Germany, Austria and Luxembourg. Self-service discount department stores accounted for 41% of fiscal 1995 revenues; food retail outlets and wholesale activities, 31%; DIY centers, 15%; furniture and home accessories markets, 8%; apparel stores, 4% and other, 1%.
