Guide to Working with Grocery Retailers in North America

Working with grocery retailers to get your products on their shelves

By Kim Finn

If you manufacture/produce/grow and sell your own foods or other related products, get your product or line of products on shelves by working with grocery retailers in North America. Different American grocery chains will accept new suppliers using different practices. With a local mom-and-pop grocery store, you might just be able to walk in and make your pitch to the owner.

As the grocery chain stores grow larger, however, expect to face more initial barriers to decision makers and more paperwork. Some make decisions at the local level, some at the regional level and still others at the corporate level. You just need to be prepared and do the research. Here’s some things to keep in mind when expanding your business:

1. Find resources for learning how to get your products on the shelves of local or regional grocery chains.

2. Learn about individual grocery retailers using the information provided on their websites.

3. Get instructions for becoming a supplier to specific grocery retailers on their own websites.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Know what you're getting into before approaching grocery chains or independent stores

Make sure you're prepared with a presentation and visual aids containing information about your product, financial position, where else your product is being sold and your production capabilities before approaching North American grocery stores.

I recommend: Getting your product on the shelves of any grocery stores in the USA takes work and preparation. Delve into the subject by first investing in the paperback book "How to Get Your Products into Supermarkets" by David Weiss and Bruce Corson. Read the free article on BNET titled "For food makers, getting products on grocery shelves is first step."

Research websites of grocery store chains and US grocery retailers located in your area

Don't bother contacting grocery chains or other grocery retail stores without performing your due diligence first. You won't always start with a face-to-face meeting; you may need to start with a letter of introduction or application process. Besides knowing everything there is to know about your own product (including why the executives of regional grocery stores executives would/should want to stock your product in their stores), you've got to get to know the store. They won't want to give your product the time of day if they learn you don't know anything about them.

I recommend: The websites of supermarkets and grocery stores in North America like The Kroger Co. and The Fresh Market publish lots of company information.

Look for instructions to suppliers on the websites of grocery stores in North America you'll target

You'll find that each grocery retailer operates differently, but most of the ones you check will tell you how to go about becoming one of their suppliers.

I recommend: SUPERVALU, a retail network of more than 2,500 stores, tells you how to get started and provides additional helpful information. It operates stores like Albertsons, ACME, Shop 'N Save and Save-A-Lot. Supermarket chains like Publix in the Southeast require a pre-qualification process to become a supplier. H-E-B welcomes suppliers with great products and who are minority/woman-owned businesses.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Visit the grocery stores in USA that you want to sell your products in to familiarize yourself with the store. Identify and check out the location of products similar to yours and how the store displays them. Again, it helps your case to show the grocery retail executives you know what you're talking about when you try to convince them to sell your product.
  • •  Start your sales pitch to a small, locally-owned grocery store in your town or city first. Once you can demonstrate your product's success in one store, you'll have an easier time getting it into additional local or regional grocery stores. Getting your local grocery store to sell your locally produced/grown food items will benefit your business, his business and give the grocery store another opportunity to help support the local economy through keeping other small businesses alive.

Guide to Grocery Retailers in North America

Who's who in grocery store chains

By Colleen Loew

Many grocery store chains throughout North America are often labeled “superstores,” which offer a wide range of products and services, including retail goods, pharmacy services, dry cleaning, bank services, bakeries, and day care services. These grocery retailers are designed to facilitate a “one-stop shopping” experience for customers seeking convenience and discounts. Grocery chains are established both regionally and nationally, depending upon their market and customer focus.

Some of the most popular grocery Stores in the USA include Wal-Mart, with the highest sales volume, The Kroger Co., and Publix. To expand further, Safeway, Inc. is one of the most popular North American grocery stores, with stores in the United States and Western Canada. Grocery retailers such as Wal-Mart offer food products and many other household goods.

1. Grocery chains have expanded their service offerings to accommodate the working consumer and today’s busy lifestyles.

2. Grocery retail and the sale and distribution of food products are essential to daily living.

3. Supermarket chains offer consumers food products at competitive prices.

Grocery stores in the USA serve as an example of the most remarkable trends in grocery retail, which have also expanded to Canada and beyond.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Select grocery chains that provide the best value for the money spent

Since 'one-stop shopping' is the top option for most consumers, select grocery retailers that offer weekly sales flyers and other perks, such as the gas discounts provided by regional grocery chains such as Giant Eagle.

I recommend: Review regional grocery chains such as Giant Eagle, which offers a “Fuelperks” program for gas discount programs. Other grocery stores in USA possess similar offerings.

Consider grocery store chains that offer the highest quality food products

Grocery retailers such as Whole Foods offer a full line of organic food products, including meat and produce, that are free of pesticides and other preservatives typically found in many foods.

I recommend: Buy from organic grocers such as Whole Foods Market and the Mustard Seed Market and Cafe, located exclusively in Ohio.

Select grocery retailers that offer the complete culinary experience

A complete culinary experience includes wine, a variety of spices and recipes from around the world that depend upon the best cuts of meat, the freshest produce, and the most unique spices to enhance flavor.

I recommend: Trader Joe's markets, a chain of grocery stores in USA, are located throughout the country, including the East Coast and California.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Conduct research regarding local, regional and national options in grocery retailers. Consumer tastes and preferences should serve as the primary emphasis in selecting retailers that maximize the customer experience. The evolution of the 'one-stop shop' for groceries, clothing, and home products should serve as the standard for the future of grocery retailing.

Guide to Grocery Retailers in North America News and Trends

Boost your success by staying current on grocery retail industry news and trends

By Kim Finn

As a small grocery store or supermarket owner, you've got to keep up on the latest grocery retailers in North America news and trends if you want to ensure the success of your business. Even with competition fierce in the industry, the lowest prices don't always draw the most customers.

Buyers and shoppers look for grocery stores in USA that carry the newest products they've heard about. They frequent American grocery chains where they find it easy to check out with self check-out lanes. Many shop grocery store chains that offer trendy olive bars, coffee bars, sushi and other enticements. Staying informed will better prepare you for your competition. Reading up on the latest news and trends affecting US grocery retailers will help you help your customers and your business:

1. Learn the latest news about distributors that impacts North American grocery stores.

2. Get smart on the latest point-of-sale equipment for US grocery retailers that will help speed up customer checkouts.

3. Read up on the newest trends in shelving, refrigerated display cases and other equipment used to stock and display products in grocery chains and independent supermarkets.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Look through online publications devoted to some aspect of the grocery retail industry

You'll find several online magazines and websites devoted to some or all aspects of the grocery retail industry, including grocery chain stores.

I recommend: Keep up to speed on the food distribution industry through the weekly trade magazine Supermarket News. It includes a free daily email alert service and daily news briefs so you're always current. Topics for the magazine break down into food types, brands, executive changes, marketing, nonfoods/pharmacy, technology and more. Bookmark the online magazine Progressive Grocer for comprehensive, relevant editorials and news. Designed for regional grocery chains, supermarket chains, super centers, wholesalers and food brokers, it anticipates, reports and interprets industry data and trends. Save Grocery Retail Online to your favorites for the latest on industry trends, corporate strategies and new product information; it includes interactive forums, databases and other business resources.

Search business news and other media websites with news affecting grocery retailers

You'll find equally valuable grocery store news and trends in online publications that reach beyond the single audience of American grocery stores and their related industries.

I recommend: SmartBrief provides current news for 20 key industries, several of which impact the grocery store industry. Commercial Property News covers lots of trends affecting property values and sales with articles like "Cedar, Fameco Tap Emerging Grocery Store Trends." Try the online news community Topix. This website links news, including grocery store industry news, from 50,000 sources to 360,000 lively user-generated forums.

Take advantage of government or professional organizations related to the grocery retail industry

Look to the government and other professional industry organizations for important news and trends.

I recommend: Start with the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics for industry outlook, earnings, working conditions and other information. Use the National Retail Federation as a source for industry information and news. The Food Marketing Institute, an organization supporting food retailers and wholesalers, issues a daily newsletter designed to keep grocery store executives informed of the latest industry news. Campbell Library at Saint Joseph's University can serve as a great source of information related to the food industry that can help you in your business.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Establish a folder on your desktop and label it Industry News and Trends for Grocery Stores in the USA, and then store your favorite links inside so you can quickly review pertinent online sources for news every day.
