Guide to International Trade Promotion in Europe

How to get involved in European international trade

By Lesley Graybeal

Since the formation of the European Union, many new benefits of international trade in Europe have emerged. While EU economic policies have favored some European economies over others, foreign traders outside of Europe have gained access to a more open market in Europe with EU member states as well as non-member states.

A number of organizations are active in European trade promotion and publish financial and economic documents, while others give international traders direct access to import/export networks. Trading with Europe has never been easier, and if your business is interesting in getting involved with international trade there are a number of avenues to do it.

When learning about European international trade, do the following:

1. Use import/export trading sites to find international buyers and suppliers.

2. Learn about European trade promotion from government and intergovernmental bodies.

3. Know how to trade products or currency in Europe.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Find an import/export network for European international trade

Working with an import export site for trade promotion in Europe is typically easy for English speakers worldwide. You can use an import/export network to quickly locate other international businesses and start getting involved in international trade in Europe on a small scale.

I recommend: ECeurope is one of the larger import/export sites specifically designed for international trade promotion in Europe. The Federation of International Trade Associations provides a portal to specifically European business options on its Europages section of its website, as well as additional features beyond the business search.

Get documents and data concerning international trade promotion in Europe

Several government and intergovernmental bodies are actively concerned with international trade promotion in Europe, including the United Nations. These groups conduct extensive research and publish documents available to the public, in addition to offering member services. Use the data and events published by these groups to become more involved in international trade in European countries.

I recommend: The European Trade Promotion Organization is a European intergovernmental body that formed as an association of government leaders from 28 European countries. The UN Economic Commission on Europe also has a branch for trade promotion in Europe and conducts events and publishes data year round.

Know the logistics of international trade in Europe

If your company is selling products in European international trade, you will have several options for shipping overseas. Be aware that rates and shipment times will vary based on the type of shipment (air or sea) and the company. The euro is also a popular currency for trading, so if you're interested in currency trade with Europe you will need to learn the logistics of currency exchange.

I recommend: UPS is one of many companies involved with international trading in Europe, and offers easy step-by-step instructions for shipping. You may prefer to use a large shipping company such as UPS if you want reliable processing and tracking. If you're interested in currency trade, Daily FX can get you started with European international trade and currency exchange with simulations and guides.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Whether you're trading in currency or importing and exporting products, be aware that currency exchange rates will affect international trade in Europe. Consult with an international bank for suggestions for dealing with the euro-dollar conversion and avoid losing revenue when your profits come home from overseas.
