It's not difficult to find an orthopedic organization or orthopedic association; there are many that offer advantages to members, whether they are patients, students or doctors. Many people will have the unfortunate experience of either injuring a body part or suffering from chronic pain that requires an orthopedic physician. Depending on where you live, finding the best fit between your needs and what's available might be easy--or not.

Finding professional orthopedic organizations can be useful if:

1. You are a medical student and want to gain an inside advantage that only members have
2. You are attempting to advertise to professional councils for orthopedics
3. You are a patient in need of an orthopedic specialist

Find out information on orthopedic groups if you are a patient

Being an informed patient is the wisest approach. It helps both the physician and the patient if common ground can be established.

I recommend: The website for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) is the best place to start for information about orthopedic practices. This site has safety tips that range from preventing sports injuries to choosing new shoes for parents and children. The American Association of Orthopedic Medicine contains a doctor directory where you can search for a member doctor by location.

A example of a useful West Coast association is the Western Orthopaedic Association website; they offer excellent member benefits like local chapters, awards and recognition and educational opportunities.

Find East Coast regional orthopedic associations, practices and/or orthopedic councils or practices

If you live on the East Coast, you can find the most appropriate association, and you don't always have to be a practicing physician to be a member.

I recommend: For professionals, the Eastern Orthopaedic Association is a prominent organization on the east coast and offers members grants, awards and continuing education through lectures, seminars and conferences. For patients, the Orthopedic Group, Inc. has been in existence for nearly 70 years and offers ten specialized services, including pediatric orthopedics, industrial medicine and physical therapy.
