These centers serve professionals at all stages of their careers, and at all educational levels, from someone with a high school diploma to those with advanced college degrees. Centers for career planning include:
- Student and alumni career counseling centers at your university.
- Career planning centers catering to adult workers and professionals.
- Online career management centers.
Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done
If you're a student, visit your university's career planning center
Most colleges and universities have career management centers that offer free career guidance to current students. You can find a job through their career management databases, and seek advice on everything from writing a resume to mastering the job interview.
I recommend: Both small and large colleges offer career services. Oklahoma City University Career Services, for example, offers both online and in-person career counseling services. And at Northwestern University's University Career Services in Evanston, IL, students can find help with everything from researching industries to interviewing for jobs.
Consult your alma mater's career counseling center
Universities are just as invested in the success of their alumni as they are their soon-to-be graduates, and their centers for career management offer advice for both young professionals and seasoned employees looking to make a career change, re-enter the workforce, or just advance up the career ladder.
I recommend: From junior colleges to Ivy League universities, most higher education institutions offer alumni career services. Columbia University Center for Career Education in New York City, for example, offers specialized career services for alumni, in addition to hosting workshops, seminars and other programs for graduates. Rutgers University in New Jersey offers Alumni Distance Online Career Counseling for all alumni.
Find local career counseling centers that offer career planning services for adults
At some universities, career counseling centers offer career planning services not only to students and alumni, but also to adult members of the community. Many are free, and offer the same guidance they do to members of the university community.
I recommend: At Oakland University in Michigan, the Adult Career Counseling Center offers free career planning services to local adults. Services include assessments, job search and resume writing, among other types of assistance. The Career Development Center at LaGuardia Community College in New York also offers career counseling services, including workshops and information sessions, to adults.
Tips & Tactics
Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide
- • If time or distance are issues for you, you may want to consider online career management centers. These centers offer the same services as traditional centers, such as resume writing, job search and personalized coaching, but everything is conducted online or by email.
