Guide to Diversity Organizations

Diversity organizations offer an array of resources to the busy business professional

Diversity groups are made up of people who share your concerns, interests and problems. They are a source of support, networking and solutions. Diversity organizations ensure the education, political, economic and social equality of all people. Members band together in their effort to achieve equality of rights and eradicate prejudice. They work to start and enforce laws to secure civil rights, educate people on their constitutional rights and take other lawful action.

Diversity associations are a source of community resources, networking and professional development. Members have the chance to make a difference. Chapters can also be a strong force in the community, combating problems like teen pregnancy, drug abuse, illiteracy and AIDS. Consider:

1. Joining diversity groups to take advantage of networking opportunities and resources.

2. Researching different opportunities and membership levels in diversity organizations.

3. Using them to grow as a professional in your field of choice.

Action Steps

The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Join diversity associations to meet and learn from your peers Being a member of a diversity association cultivates and empowers leaders. You meet people that you may not in everyday life. You strive for professional excellence because you're connected to accomplished peers. Members inspire each other with the goal of making a meaningful difference.

I recommend:  Diversity World provides you with a directory of associations for diversity. Blacks in Government (BIG) is the only association committed to promoting the African American public servant. Print out membership material order forms or an application to join. The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is to protect and promote the educational, political, social and economic equality of rights for all people. The group also works to eradicate racial discrimination and hatred. Join the NAACP Washington Bureau Action Alert Network online.

Pay membership dues to belong to organizations for diversity Dues to belong to a diversity organization range depending on the membership level. There are so many to join, some focus on certain ethnic groups and others on certain careers.

I recommend:  Black Career Women (BCW) is a national diversity council organization that provides support to black women in the workforce. BCW identifies and addresses the needs of black women, helping them achieve. Membership includes workshops, discounts and access to a career center. Use HireDiversity.com to search for business diversity organizatins.

Benefit individually and professionally from joining organizations for diversity By placing diversity in organizations at the utmost importance, you get access to magazines, reports, community events, seminars, advocacy opportunities, groups and forums. The resources help you learn and grow, as a person and a professional.

I recommend:  League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is a diversity group formed to defend the rights and promote the well being of Hispanic Americans. It's grown to become the biggest group serving the Latino community. LULAC has a variety of memberships and benefits include a subscription to LULAC News, invitation to events and a strong voice. Participate in webinars by choosing one from the webinar gallery. The National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) gives their members tools and resources to advance their careers. Member benefits include networking opportunities, workshops and community involvement through charity events. Develop your leadership skills through participate in the NAAAP National Convention.
