Guide to Sealing Glues

Keeping it all together: Sealing glues help you get the job done

By Emily Lugg

There is a big difference between ordinary sealing glues and industrial sealing glues. The degree of adhesion plays an important role in most industrial jobs and is crucial to consider while you are choosing sealing glues for your major projects.

The best place to start when trying to find sealing glues is to evaluate the job you and your staff are going to use it for. This is a critical choice as you can't afford to risk any breakdowns. A few types of sealing glues to consider:

1. Hot melt sealing glues;

2. Reactive sealing glues;

3. Temporary sealing glues;

4. Or drying sealing glues.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Think about whether hot melt sealing glues are right for the project

Hot glue is usually applied with a glue gun. The adhesive is applied hot and hardens as it cools to create the bond. This is a quick way to create a solid bond on many different surfaces.

I recommend: Commercial Hot Melt Glue is a good sealing glues provider to start with. It offers sealing glue sticks that are harder than other hot glues. Glu Stix offers hot melt glue in not only sticks but in pellets and chips as well.

Consider reactive sealing glue

Reactive sealing glues usually come in two parts. When the parts are combined, a reaction ensues and the bond is created. Reactive adhesives create a very strong bond and can be used for demanding situations.

I recommend: The Binding Source offers several reactive sealing glues. It also offers some additional sealing glues information that may be helpful during your selection process. Master Bond offers a variety of two-part reactive systems.

Decide if temporary sealing glue is the best fit for your job

Sometimes you may just need a bond or seal for a designated amount of time. In these cases, you can use temporary sealing glues that can be removed later. Temporary adhesives work best on paper products and other light materials.

I recommend: Create for Less offers an Elmer's spray adhesive that can be either permanent or temporary depending on what you plan on using it for. Ditchek also offers an adhesive spray that can be used for temporary bonds as well.

Look into drying sealing glues for your business needs

Drying sealing glues are used mostly for household projects or other jobs of small magnitude. Glue sticks and rubber cement are good examples of drying sealing glues.

I recommend: Gluestore.com carries a nice drying sealing glues list. Many are sprays, but they carry other forms of drying sealing glues as well. Save on Crafts also stocks several types of sealing glues, many of which are drying adhesives.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  It is always a good idea to start small and work your way up. A sealing glue is such an important piece of filling cracks or fixing a loose screw that trying your adhesive before using it in the actual job can only benefit you and your business. It's best to go into any project with confidence.
