Guide to Rare Earth Magnets Education and Training

Educate yourself on the uses of rare earth magnets

By Kathryn Keep

What are rare earth magnets? Even the smallest neodymium magnets for sale are ten times stronger than the common iron ferrite magnets children play with. Rare earth permanent magnets have some ability to "remember" the magnetic fields they have been exposed to, and they will not lose their magnetic field unless exposed to heat above 185 degrees Fahrenheit.

Before you buy rare earth magnets, be aware of how to use them safely. Large rare earth magnets are strong enough to do bodily harm if handled improperly. Neodymium magnets can shatter when they attract each other. Strong magnetic fields can affect electronic devices including computers, TVs, and pacemakers. Small rare earth magnets pose a choking hazard children and pets.

The possibilities for strong industrial rare earth magnets are endless. Some people believe that these magnets have the power to relieve pain and promote healing. Who uses strong rare earth magnets?

1. The electronics industry relies on rare earth magnets to build products such as computers and speakers.

2. Hobbyists use rare earth magnets to attach small parts.

3. Colleges and high schools teach the principles of magnetism to their students with rare earth magnets.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Learn more about rare earth magnets and what they can do

A single small rare earth magnet can easily hold many times its own weight. Everything from computer hard drives to vending machines contains these types of magnets. Start your training in rare earth magnetics by learning all the exciting applications of these magnets.

I recommend: Daniel Rutter explains the technical, as well as the more experimental uses, of rare earth magnets. Learn the practical uses for neodymium magnets at K&J Magnetics, which has as extensive list on its website.

Receive how-to training in industrial rare earth magnets

Rare earth magnets education and training ranges from simple how-to information in fundamental magnetism to professional training.

I recommend: Polaris Rare Earth Materials offers onsite training courses in rare earth materials and magnetism. Professional engineers teach the courses and can customize them to meet a variety of needs. For those looking for basic information, National Imports offers a Magnet University, which has a wide variety of topics available free on the website. The company provides links to earth magnets for sale.

Keep up with the latest news about rare earth magnets online

One of the most exciting recent uses for rare earth magnets is in wind turbines that generate electricity. Continuing education means being in the know about new developments in the technical field of rare earth magnetics.

I recommend: Read the editorial highlights from Webcom Communications through its online magazine "Magnetics Business and Technology." Keep up to date with articles from Industrial Equipment News, which dedicates a whole category to rare earth magnetics.

Guide to Rare Earth Magnets

How to sell or buy rare earth magnets on the Internet

By Emmet McMahan

Rare earth magnetic material consists of the elements scandium and yttrium, as well as elements in the lanthanide series and are much stronger than magnets composed of iron of alnico. Despite the name, rare earth elements are no longer particularly rare or difficult to mine and it is now possible to buy rare earth magnets at a relatively low price.

Large rare earth magnets typically produce magnetic field strengths in excess of 1.2 teslas while conventional iron magnets rarely exceed 0.1 teslas. However, industrial rare earth magnets must normally be coated with nickel because they are extremely brittle.

The most common type of industrial rare earth magnets are made from neodymium, iron and boron. Companies with neodymium magnets for sale recommend that these magnets not be used at temperatures above 300 degrees F. Samarium-cobalt magnets are weaker and more expensive but have better resistance to oxidation and temperature.

It is now common to find rare earth magnets in audio speakers and computer hard drives.

Three points to consider when buying or selling rare earth magnets are:
  1. Manufacturers need resellers to shop their wares;
  2. Manufacturers will deal directly with sellers;
  3. The Internet solves a previous advertising dilemma.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Become a reseller for a rare earth magnet supplier

Rare earth magnet manufacturers frequently need help in selling their products. A retailer who already has an online presence and sells complementary products may wish to buy rare earth magnets for resale.

I recommend: National Imports actively recruits resellers for their line of rare earth magnets. You can find an application form here.

Order industrial rare earth magnets directly from manufacturers

Manufacturers offer the best prices on large orders and are able to provide the greatest variety of sizes. Manufacturers of rare earth magnets are also more likely to make magnets in custom shapes.

I recommend: Find several shapes and sizes in stock at Armstrong Magnetics, Inc. Armstrong offers discounts for online orders and additional discounts for large orders. Magnet Sales & Manufacturing offers a large collection of the tools you will need to calculate the required strengths of your magnets.

Get your company listed in directories on the Internet

Manufacturers with rare earth magnets for sale can have difficulty finding an advertising venue for their products and use trade associations and listings on the internet.

I recommend: Apply to be listed with the Rare-Earth Magnetics Association. This is a public information site that should be familiar to anyone with rare earth magnets for sale. You can also apply to become a member of the Rare-Earth Magnetics Association.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  If you have neodymium magnets for sale, you should know that magnets are considered a hazardous material and require special handling when shipping by air. Magnets may not be transported by air if their field strength is more than 0.00525 gauss at 15 feet.

Guide to Latex Paint Key Terms

Understand the key terms relating to latex paint

By Howard Robertson

There are many advantages of latex paint - a water-soluble paint. Most importantly, this type of paint, which is frequently used in homes, both in the exterior and interior, is less toxic as compared to other paints. Additionally, latex paint dries quickly and is easy to clean up.

Latex paint also provides better gloss than any other paints. Some important terms that you will need to know if you are using latex paints for your home or office are low VOC, sheen, gloss and primers.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Flat latex paint

Flat latex paint is ideal for the interior of your home or office. It is the best choice to cover up imperfections in the walls or ceilings. Additionally, flat latex paint is somewhat resistant to chips and stains.

I recommend: You can read about the benefits of flat latex paint at Essortment, an information resource that covers many topics including do-it-yourself topics like painting.

Eggshell latex paint

Eggshell latex paint provides a slight sheen or gloss to the material that it is applied to. Its name is derived from an eggshell; if you examine it from all angles, it looks a bit shiny. Eggshell latex paint is known for its durability and stain resistance.

I recommend: PaintPRO, a journal for professional painters and contractors, provides an article on eggshell paint and explains its history and its advantages over other types of paints.

Elastomer

As its name suggests, elastomer is known for its elastic properties. This polymer is used in latex paints.

I recommend: To learn more about the chemicals in latex paints, especially elastomer, you can refer to wiseGEEK, an information resource.

Low VOC

VOC or volatile organic compounds are found in conventional paints. These chemicals pollute the air and can be harmful to your health. The good news is that many paint companies are producing low or no VOC paints. These are much better for the air quality and could be odor-free.

I recommend: ToolBase Services, an online resource, provides information on VOC paints, including low and no VOC products.

Primers

In order for your surface to look even and finished, a primer is necessary. Primers are applied to the surface before the paint. By performing this first step, the latex paint will have something to stick to - therefore producing a higher quality and a more durable finish.

I recommend: You can learn about the advantages of primers at Calvert Painting Company, a painting contractor that provides services such as interior and exterior painting and wallpaper removal.

Solvents

In order to transfer the paint from the brush to the surface, the material must have a sufficient consistency. Water is the solvent that is mainly used for latex paints, which makes it less harmful and lower in chemicals. Oil-based paints use thinners (non-water) that can be harmful.

I recommend: Painting Key, an information resource, provides a definition and information on solvents.
