Guide to Image Sensors
Choose between a CCD or CMOS image sensors for your image sensing devicesAn image sensor contains either a CCD or a CMOS. CCD image sensors work well for small monitors, as well as large displays with very high numbers of tiny pixels. Plus, CCD imaging is quiet. However, though CMOS image sensors are not quite as popular, there are several strong drawbacks to CCD technology as compared with CMOS:
1. CCD image sensors draw more power than CMOS image sensors.
2. The drive method for a CCD image sensor is complicated.
3. The fabrication of intricate CCD sensors is far from simple, whereas CMOS sensors are straightforward.
Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done
Buy a device with CCD image sensing
Photosensitive silicon is integral to the electronic sensor CCD operation, where thousands of photosensitive elements correspond with pixels in a matrix of rows and columns. Amplifiers convert the charges from rows of elements into voltage signals, which then display as pixels on a monitor. CCD imaging applications, besides those listed above, are photometry, fluoroscopy, spectroscopy, high-speed imaging and photography.
I recommend:
Andor Technology carries a wide range of CCD camera image sensors, including electron multiplying CDD (EMCCD), intensified CCD (ICCD) and x-ray detection cameras. If you are looking for a CCD industrial image sensor, SICK, Inc. publishes detailed information about their products so you can match a product with your specific industrial application. Also, check out the Work.com Guide to CCD Sensors.
Buy CMOS image sensing systems
A CMOS sensor translates light picked up by photo elements into electronic pixels more simply than CCD sensors. CMOS image sensors have many of the same applications as CCD sensors: specifically, security cameras and machine inspection, as well as scientific imaging devices.
I recommend:
Many sources carry both CCD and CMOS, but some carry more of one or the other. Among Hamamatsu's products is a self-scanning CMOS sensor for multi-channel spectrophotometry and other industrial processes. For commercial and domestic CMOS devices, Chinavasion Wholesale Electronics carries a nice selection of CMOS cameras and recorders. Check them out to see the kinds of things that are possible. Also, check out the Work.com Guide to CMOS Sensors.
Shop other image sensor manufacturers and compare prices
The image sensor business is a big market. When you've found the image sensing device you're looking for, check out one or two other websites to make sure you get the best price.
I recommend:
Sony carries CCD video cameras in both black and white (mono) and color formats, as well as scan systems and a CCD linear sensor. DALSA is one of those developers that carries a wide selection of both CMOS and CCD sensors.
Tips & Tactics
Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide- There are definite differences between CCD and CMOS devices, but don't spend so much time scrutinizing the sensor that you forget to pay attention to an image device's overall functionality.
