Guide to Plastic Pumps

Plastic Pumps are your low cost alternative to alloy pumps

By Nikki Davis

Plastic pumps are less expensive than their metal alloy counterparts, yet they still offer you broad chemical resistance. You can use them to keep your liquids from contaminating, and in a mag-drive form they are more efficient than comparable alloy pumps. They are also lightweight for easy transportability.

Plastic pumps do come with their limitations, though, so when choosing plastic over metal, you have to weigh the disadvantages with the advantages. Plastic pumps give you limited pressure ratings as opposed to alloy pumps. They have limited high and low temperature ratings relative to alloy pumps, meaning that you can only take them so high and so low in temperature before they are structurally incompatible with your liquid. They are less impact resistant than metal alloy pumps, and they are not recommended for flammable liquids. They are also less capable of handling abrasive fluids.

To find the right plastic pumps for you:

1. Determine if your liquid is compatible with a plastic pump.

2. Determine if plastic pumps fall in your price range.

3. Speak to your plastic pump supplier to make sure there aren't any factors to using their pump that you may unknowingly be overlooking.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Start your search for industrial plastic pumps to compare price and quality

Start your search for a manufacturer for plastic pumps online. You can easily price compare or send away for company catalogs.

I recommend: The Plastic Pump Depot offers centrifugal, gear, regenerative turbine and diapraghm metering plastic pumps. The Plastic Pump Depot is located in Sewaren, NJ, and they take Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Stan-Cor MK Series Sealless pumps are centrifugal sealless pumps that are magnetically-driven and are corrosive chemicals. Wilden Pump & Engineering, LLC offers their Original™ Series built for various processes including waste applications. They use a variety of components to meet your abrasion, temperature, and chemical compatibility needs.

Find plastic pump mold suppliers and distributors of industrial plastic pumps to fit your needs

Plastic pumps come in all shapes and sizes, and finding the one for your specific use is the key.

I recommend: Valcor offers you solenoid operated metering pumps that are positive displacement devices. In these pumps the effects of your fluid pressure, your density and your viscosity are minimized, so they are useful in many of your precision metering or dispensing applications. At Utilities Supply Company you can find a wide variety of pumps including those by Blue White, Little Giant, Versa-Matic, LMI – Milton Roy, Rule and Finish Thompson Inc, and if you can't find what you are looking for, they might be able to source it for you.

Look for simple plastic pumps that you can work by hand

Simple plastic pumps that you can work by hand are great for industries such as farming and dairy. You can also use a plastic water pump on water craft vessels.

I recommend: You can find a plastic hand pump for the chemical, dairy and sanitary maintenance industries through Beckson Industrial Products. Check out the plastic siphon hand pumps at BayTec Containers.
