Guide to Attorney Recruiters

Chose the right legal recruiter to land the job you want

At one time or another in your career, you may require a legal recruiter. Whether you want to advance in your area of expertise, move in an entirely new direction, stay in your location or relocate, legal staffing firms can help in your search for the perfect legal position.

Attorney recruiters come in many varieties. It's important to explore all channels to maximize your exposure to potential positions of interest. While traditional attorney recruiters often contact potential candidates with cold calls, legal headhunters who work on your behalf will actively search and provide you with job leads. Explore all the possibilities, including:

1. National chains that have offices in major cities;

2. Local legal recruiters;

3. Non-traditional recruiters.

Action Steps

The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Go global and look at international legal headhunters If you are open to relocation, or actively looking for a job overseas, look into attorney recruiters that have international legal headhunters on board.

I recommend:  Garkal International and Major, Lindsey & Africa are international legal headhunters.

Look at a variety of legal recruiters There are several excellent search options that will help you locate major attorney recruiters. Keep in mind that national staffing firms you may not think of for legal recruiting, can actually have legal recruiting departments. Remember not to stop with one firm. The more recruiters work for you, the more your resume will be exposed to the market.

I recommend:  Narrow down the search firms you want to use by using a site such as lawjobs.com or FindLaw.

Go beyond legal staffing Your experience and legal background may make you qualified for an executive or leadership position. If you want a position that goes beyond a traditional attorney, expand your use to executive search firms. These firms may also offer attorney placement in non-traditional legal roles in addition to executive positions.

I recommend:  Visit a legal recruiter that specializes in high-end executive jobs, such as 6FigureJobs.com, or find a menu of executive search firms at The Career Portal.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide
  • Set the parameters for the job qualities, salary and locations that you will consider. This will help you quickly respond to potential positions offered by lawyer recruiters, and you won't waste your time or your recruiter's time by considering positions outside of your interest.
  • Law recruiters have varying compensation for their work. Some lawyer recruiters receive their compensation from the employer upon placement, while others will ask for compensation or a fee from you. Be sure to ask about how the legal recruiting firm is compensated up front.
