Guide to Tax Law Organizations

Stay up-to-date with changes in the law with tax law associations

By Melissa Haveman

Professional associations, like tax law groups, are essential for working professionals. The benefits you can gain through membership far outweigh the yearly dues. Consider just some of the ways that tax law councils can help you in your business.

1. You can stay current on changing tax laws through tax law organization seminars and conferences.

2. Tax law organizations allow you to network with other professionals.

3. By participating in tax law councils, you'll be gaining important professional development, which can lead to promotions, more clients and greater respect in the industry.

You may have already encountered information about tax law organizations from your university program, state board or employer. You'll find several different tax law organizations that focus specifically on this area of law and accounting, in addition to more general organizations.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Look for professional associations that include tax law groups

General associations often have smaller subsections that focus on particular areas. Many tax organizations will offer membership to you when you join the larger, general association, although some may require a smaller membership fee in addition. You'll get the benefits of belonging to both tax law associations and general ones.

I recommend: Join the American Taxation Association, a section of the American Accounting Association. You can also join the tax section of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Attend the conferences and other events for a tax law association

Once you join, take advantage of the benefits that the tax law group can provide to you. Most associations will have an annual meeting where you can attend seminars to stay current on tax law changes and network with other professionals.

I recommend: Attend one of the conferences sponsored by the National Tax Association.

Get involved with tax law organizations focusing on tax reform

In addition to general professional associations, you can use your knowledge and expertise to help create positive social change. You'll want information about tax law organizations focusing on tax reform to make sure that your values and beliefs reflect the organization's before joining.

I recommend: Americans for Tax Reform offers a number of ways to participate in the goals of the organization. Or, join the mailing list for Citizens for Tax Justice to learn more about this organization.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  In addition to national tax law organizations, many states have their own associations, which focus on state and local laws and issues. These organizations can be a great way to make local contacts.
