Guide to Ohio Local Courts

Find information on Ohio Courts to assist you with your case

By Michelle Cramer

A basic knowledge of the Ohio court system can be very beneficial if you ever find yourself in the courtroom. All too often individuals and businesses find the need to file a lawsuit, or are at the receiving end of a lawsuit, and their lack of knowledge on how the court system works leaves them lost in the proceedings. Regardless of the circumstances that put you there, it doesn’t hurt to understand the court process.

It’s important to know that there are multiple courts in each state that handle different types of cases. Each of these courts has a judge that administers the law and case process. When considering OH local courts, keep the following in mind:

1. The Ohio local court structure includes municipal courts, courts of common pleas, the Court of Appeals and the State Supreme Court.

2. Factors such as where the parties reside and the location where the parties sign a contractual agreement determine jurisdiction for Ohio local courts.

3. The municipal local court in OH may provide a means for paying traffic tickets online.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Discover which OH local court serves your area

At the bottom tier of local courts in OH is the Mayor's Court, which handles basic local ordinance violations and state traffic tickets. Municipal and county courts handle misdemeanors, local traffic violations and civil actions up to $15,000. The Court of Claims handles all lawsuits brought against the state of Ohio. The Courts of Common Pleas, located in each county, hear the majority of the remaining types of cases, including appeals filed on lower court decisions. The 12 district Courts of Appeals hear appellate cases filed on decisions made in the Court of Common Pleas, while the state Supreme Court hears appeals filed on decisions made by the Court of Appeals.

I recommend: To find contact information and website links for Courts of Common Pleas by county, and Courts of Appeals by district, visit the Ohio Judicial Conference website and click on the county in which you reside. The Court of Appeals of Ohio – Eighth Appellate District provides detailed information on Court of Appeals organization and jurisdiction.

Ascertain which division of the local court in Ohio will handle your case

Courts of Common Pleas in Ohio have various divisions for different case styles. The general division handles civil and criminal cases, as well as appeals from lower courts. The domestic relations division hears cases on divorce, child support and child custody issues. Offenses committed by minors and paternity cases are part of the juvenile division. Finally, the probate division handles estates, wills, mental illness cases, conservatorships, adoptions and marriage licenses.

I recommend: The Butler County Clerk of Courts provides links to court records databases for each county in Ohio. Access court forms through links from The Cleveland Law Library Association.

Resolve a traffic violation in local courts in Ohio

Cities, villages and towns establish municipal courts for their area. These local courts in OH maintain exclusive jurisdiction for cases involving local ordinance violations. Most individuals deal with municipal courts regarding traffic violations. Many of the Municipal Court websites provide an online payment center to pay for traffic and local criminal violations conveniently. The Courts of Common Pleas hear appeals filed on municipal court decisions.

I recommend: A few of the municipal courts in Ohio maintain a website, which you can access through the The Cleveland Law Library Association. Access the online payment centers, such as the one provided by Parma Municipal Court, to take care of traffic violations without appearing in court.
