Apply the Schein's theory on corporate culture to your workplace

Creating a corporate culture demonstrates the importance of creating appropriate systems of shared values and beliefs to help employees work together to achieve business goals. According to Edgar Schein, the culture of a group is defined as a pattern of shared basic assumptions that the group has learned to resolve issues and the transference of those assumptions to new group members. In other words, the Schein theory suggests that as groups resolve problems, they form a collective learning environment that creates a set of shared beliefs. These beliefs make up the actual 'culture' of the group.

Guide to Management Theory of Edgar Schein

Let the Edgar Schein organizational culture and leadership model transform your company

By Jeanne Dininni, Writer, Editor, Blogger, Notary Public

Edgar Schein's management theory focuses on the culture within an organization. According to Schein, culture is the primary source of resistance to change within an organization, and an accurate understanding of organizational dynamics begins with recognizing this fact. Edgar Schein theory presents 3 levels of culture, which are necessary to understand for effective leadership: artifacts (surface cultures, such as dress, which are easily seen but difficult to decipher), espoused values (conscious goals, strategies and philosophies), and basic assumptions (unconscious beliefs and values that form the core of culture and affect everything we do).

Schein also analyzed group dynamics based on his theory of organizational culture. According to Schein theory, groups operate within the group culture in the same way that organizations operate within the culture of the organization. His model divides informal groups into 3 classifications:

1. Horizontal cliques, or informal groups of similar organizational rank who work in close proximity;

2. Vertical cliques, or groups containing various ranks within the same department; and

3. The last set identified by Schein's management theory, mixed cliques, or groups containing members of different ranks, departments and locations.

Cultural analysis

Edgar Schein studied the management of organizations and determined that each organization should carefully educate new members into the existing culture. Schein discussed the means of cultural analysis in his writing and speeches. Managers should ask relevant questions to provide a cultural analysis of the organization that can be communicated to all members of the group.

I recommend: The Symphony Orchestra Institute has relevant information on Edgar Schein, his theories and findings.

Organizational learning

Edgar Schein discusses organizational learning and the benefits of proper learning for the members of all organizations. He notes that there are two types of learning that take place, and effective managers will choose appropriate steps to make sure that members learn the necessities properly. Schein also discusses the various types of learners and others who resist learning by becoming invisible in a large organization.

I recommend: Harvard Business School provides information of Edgar Schein and his theory of management.

Process consultation

Edgar Schein puts theory into practice and notes the benefits of process consultation in organizations. The goal of process consultation is constant change and improvement. The practice depends on consultation with a client to investigate problems and solutions to provide better service and results.

I recommend: The Learning Group has clear explanations of Edgar Schein's methods for change and improvement in an organization.

Career anchors

Edgar Schein developed a questionnaire to help workers assess their career anchors which include their competencies, motives and values. Although many students and workers decide on their ideal career, they soon find out that their studies or job are boring or frustrating. Many organizations strive to help employees find satisfying careers, but the success of the organization remains their main focus.

I recommend: Career Anchors Online supply information on the questionnaire that helps employees find their ideal career.

Corporate culture

As one of the highly respected gurus of organizational management, Edgar Schein contributed significantly to the success of many managers and leaders. He created the term, corporate culture, to the jargon used when discussing dynamic and successful management. Under careful scrutiny, expert analysts can determine that any corporate culture is healthy or unhealthy.

I recommend: Management Minds defines and clarifies terms that are important to the discussion of corporate culture.

Doctor-patient model

When people get sick, they call a doctor, and they call a consultant when their business is sick or in need of change. According to Edgar Schein and other leaders in the management of organizational behavior, organizational leaders should call a consultant when problems surface; and the consultant, like a medical doctor, should diagnose the problem before contributing ideas for a solution.
