Guide to Documentary and Nonfiction Film Organizations

Stay abreast of industry issues, news and trends by joining documentary and nonfiction film organizations

By Tai G., Writer

If you are a documentary filmmaker, you would do well to partner with nonfiction film organizations to strengthen your expertise and credibility. Industry organizations bring together professionals with similar goals and challenges. Members of industry organizations come from all company aspects of the independent film industry, but all share the same objective of expanding their knowledge.

Becoming a member of the right organization opens the door to a wealth of expertise. You will be exposed to many networking opportunities, information and resources. Additionally, documentary film organizations may also provide invaluable services that include up-to-date news, education opportunities and industry support. When looking for membership with a documentary film organization, remember the following:

1. Make sure the documentary trade organization you're interested in is credible. Check the Better Business Bureau or other industry accreditations.

2. Most organizations charge fees for memberships, so make sure you’re getting your money’s worth before you pay.

3. Some documentary organizations don’t stipulate membership for taking advantage of their educational programs.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Become a member of an accredited documentary films organization

Although many organizations offer information, tools and resources to non-members, you can benefit substantially from becoming a member. Membership opens the door to additional services, informational resources and networking opportunities. More importantly, organizations give you strength, credibility and support.

I recommend: Film Independent offers film education and production rentals to its members. IFP provides networking, exposure and project tracking, as just a few benefits.

Join nonfiction film organizations that offer a schedule of events

Events and conferences are a boon to any film maker's career. They give you an opportunity to network and share issues with industry peers. More importantly, they give you exposure within the industry, and provide you an opportunity to further your relationships and credibility within the industry. Try and pick organizations with nationally-recognized events.

I recommend: Austin-based Documentary Arts and the International Documentary Association both provide an events calendar for educational and networking opportunities.

Pick documentary associations with online resources and tools you can use

You can improve the knowledge of the independent film industry by picking an organization that offers online access to member tools and resources. Many organizations offer newsletters containing up-to-date industry news on industry issues and trends. Ideally you want to pick an organization that allows you access to a job center, industry publications and mentors.

I recommend: The Independent offers a learning section with advice and QA interviews with industry experts. ITVS provides fact sheets, discussion guides, action kits, teacher curricula and preview tapes as part of their resource offerings.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide
