Guide to Rhythm and Blues (RandB) Music Record Labels

Audition for rhythm and blues (RandB) music record labels

By Kristina Seleshanko

As the popularity of rhythm and blues (RandB) music record labels continues, up-and-coming artists may find the prospect of finding the right label a dizzying experience. From major companies to independent rhythm and blues record labels, there are at least hundreds to choose from in the United States alone. Auditioning for every company is possible, but it's time-consuming and costly. Also, you'll only grow frustrated if you keep receiving rejections from labels that simply weren't right for your music in the first place.

When contacting a rhythm and blues producer (who might also refer to the genre as R&B, RnB, urban pop, Hip Pop R&B, Heavy R&B or Modern R&B), you'll need to mail him or her a demo with your best three to five songs, an 8X10, professionally taken photo of you or your group, and a bio. But who should you contact first? This guide suggests:

1. Major Rhythm and Blues record companies,

2. Independent (Indie) rhythm and blues labels,

3. And directories of Rhythm and Blues music labels.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Explore major rhythm and blues record companies

Before you audition for a major company with an R and B record label, you'll need a solid performance background and a following among listeners. When submitting your demo package, be sure to include your best media reviews, too. Remember that most music companies--especially the major ones--usually listen only the first 30 seconds of your first demo song; there's no other way for producers to listen to all the submissions they receive.

I recommend: Def Jam (owned by Universal) focuses on hip hop and R&B. Universal Motown continues to produce strong R&B artists. Geffen is diverse in its offerings, and its artist lineup includes R&B and hip hop groups. Columbia Records produces many R&B artists, too.

Discover independent rhythm and blues music labels

The rules for auditioning for an independent rhythm and blues label are the same as for submitting to a major record company. Be sure to contact the company ahead of time to discover the name of a music producer for rhythm and blues. Spell their name correctly, and let them know if you'll be performing near their location any time soon.

I recommend: Black Rain Records has an R&B division starring Kieran; to learn more, click on "The Company" link in the left-hand menu. Happy Way Records regularly produces R&B and is always open to new artists. Traveler Records is a small indie label producing several types of music, including R&B.

Use directories to find rhythm and blues labels

Researching rhythm and blues record labels is a little time-consuming, but it will save you endless frustration and expense in the long run. Take the time now to explore a wide variety of labels. Some directories focus only on R&B labels, but most cover all types of labels.

I recommend: Record Labels and Companies Guide offers directories of major and independent labels. RecordLabelResource.com provides a comprehensive list of active record labels, including those producing R&B. HipHopRnbSoul.com also has a directory of R&B labels.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  If possible, find representation before you have a rhythm and blues record label audition. Not only is an agent more likely to help you catch the attention of a producer, but your agent can focus on the business side of things while you focus on what's most important: the music.
