Guide to Publishing Industry Education and Training

Take courses for publishing to prepare you to work in the industry

By Shannon Tani

Publishing industry education and training is absolutely necessary if you want to work in the publishing world. There are many people who dream of working in publishing, but very few have the proper publishing industry training and qualifications to be able to do so.

There are certainly many places that you can take publishing classes no matter what your career goals. In general, it's best to look for live classes that allow you to interact with the teacher and other students.

Some things that you should know before you take publishing courses:

1. The publishing industry is very competitive. Receiving publishing industry education and training is no guarantee that you will get a job upon completion.

2. If possible, it's a good idea to get an internship while you are in school. This allows you to get hands-on publishing training and the experience necessary to get a better job.

3. It's important to keep your publishing education up to date. Sign up to receive industry magazines so that you are constantly aware of current industry trends.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Take courses in publishing through a school that offers a four-year degree

In most cases, you'll want to get a four-year degree if you want to work in publishing, since this is what most employers look for. If you are serious about the industry, you may even want to get a Masters Degree. Many great schools offer classes in publishing to help you learn the basics.

I recommend: U.S. News and World Reports lists the top schools that offer a major in publishing. Clicking on the school's name will get you more detailed information. CollegeBoard also lists schools that have a publishing program.

Attend publishing seminars to keep your knowledge fresh

If you are already working in the publishing industry, you no doubt want to stay up to date on industry information. A seminar is a great way for busy professionals to update their skills. Additionally, you may be able to network with others in the class.

I recommend: Fred Gleeck Productions offers a two-day seminar on publishing to increase your skills. You are also eligible for a personal consultation. Harrington Associates gives seminars about the magazine publishing industry.

Take classes in publishing to learn how to self-publish your book

Not everyone wants a job in the publishing industry, but many budding writers want to get their book published. Self-publication is an option. Take a workshop or seminar to learn the basics.

I recommend: Alan Korwin teaches classes on how to self-publish your work. Fiction writers may be interested in a course by Gavin Sinclair.
