Knight-Ridder, Inc.. The Group's principal activity is to publish daily and non-daily newspapers. Newspapers include advertising and newspaper sales. Advertising includes retail, national and classified. It publishes 32 daily newspapers in 29 U.S. markets, with a readership of 8.1 million daily and 11.5 million Sunday. The Group has interactive web sites and a variety of investments in Internet and technology companies. Its internet operation, Knight Ridder Digital (KRD), develops and manages online properties. Its newspapers include The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, The Miami Herald, el Nuevo Herald, The Kansas City Star and the Newsprint. During October, 2005 the Group acquired Silicon Valley Community Newspaper and on 03-Aug-2005, it sold its interests in the Detroit Free Press and Detroit Newspaper Agency. The Group operates the Real Cities Network of local news Web sites in more than 110 markets nationwide. During 2006, the Group intends to merge with McClatchy.
