Guide to Satellite Radio

Choosing the right portable satellite radio service and equipment

By Trisha Schulz

You've basically got two options when it comes to satellite radios: XM or SIRIUS. But that's just for a service provider. There's many more options when it comes to picking out a receiver and finding the right accessories to go along with it.

According to some satellite radio information, the popularity of satellite radio is due to consumer frustrations with the FM mainstream offerings and constant commercialism. Satellite offers commercial-free radio and with more than 100 channels, you're bound to find something that interests you. It can be especially helpful for those long business trips as well.

When determining which service and equipment is right for you, consider the following:

1. Peruse satellite radio stations offered by each service. Decide whether you're more interested in talk or news formats, sports or a specific genre of music.

2. Decide between satellite radio devices and other equipment by figuring out where you would listen to satellite radio the most, in your vehicle or at home.

3. An XM and a SIRIUS satellite radio subscription cost about the same. However, there may be savings by signing up for a long-term contract.

4. In July, 2008, the FCC approved the merger of Sirius and XM to form a single satellite radio service, so expect major changes to satellite subscription and programming choices.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Compare satellite radio service

Spend some time on both the XM and SIRIUS websites so you can get a feel for how each operates and what channels are offered. Since you're most likely going to be locked into at least a one-year contract, make sure you're completely comfortable with whichever service you choose.

I recommend: XM Satellite Radio breaks their subscription plan into quarterly, annually, 2 years or 3 years. SIRIUS offers several different subscription options such as annual or monthly.

Choose from satellite radio receivers

You've got options with hardware and it mostly depends on how you plan to use your satellite radio. You can choose a portable model or a home-based version or one that you can 'plug-and-play.' You may not even need a receiver if your car stereo can receive satellite broadcasts. All you may need is the appropriate antenna.

I recommend: Find both SIRIUS and XM radio receivers and kits at Circuit City. For home, for a vehicle or for "plug-and-play" use, browse the receivers available through Crutchfield New Media.

Find satellite radio accessories

Whether you need a specific antenna or just batteries, make sure you have all the right components so that your receiver works properly. There are several products on the market, too, that can enhance your satellite radio listening experience.

I recommend: Check out MyRadioStore for batteries, splitters and other accessories. From mounts, cases and cords to kits and adapters, find all the accessories you'll need whether for an XM or SIRIUS satellite radio receiver at Go Electronic.
