Guide to Sports Organizations

Increase your business exposure through sports organizations

By Linda C. Ray

Sport group organizations offer a slew of opportunities for positive exposure for your business. In addition to members of the sports industry associations who work within the industry in some capacity, you will have opportunities to be recognized by other national athletics association members, including businesses and educational institutions that support the athletics group.

Affiliation with sports organizations provides lobbying and networking opportunities that can be immensely helpful to your own business interests, while you support the industry. Membership in a sports organization for nonprofessionals often means access to information and contacts that can be important to your own company. Regional sports associations offer even more chances to network with local business and industry leaders in your community. Use your membership in sporting organizations in a number of different ways.

1. Expand your network through an athletics organization

2. Support the industry by participating in an athletics association

3. Stand out as a leader in sport group organizations

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Develop business contacts in an organization for sports

Sports industry associations hold regular meetings, seminars and conventions for members and interested parties. At these athletics association events as well as through various committees in which you can participate, you'll have numerous occasions to socialize and network with other business people who support and work with the athletics group. The business leaders you meet could offer a number of trade opportunities for you and your company.

I recommend: Women in Sports and Events promotes the issues of women in the sports industry business. The National Association for Sports and Physical Education provides a forum for members interested in promoting the youth sports organization initiatives and other professional interested in youth sports activities.

Show your interest by joining sports associations

Especially if you hope to do business with any coaches, players or other peripheral sports related companies in any kind of capacity, you will want to express your support as well as meet national and local leaders in the industry. You often can do this best by participating in sport group organizations with both your presence and your financial support.

I recommend: The National Association for Girls and Women in Sports is a popular area that you should explore for exposure to a variety of experts in the sports industry. Special Olympics is an organization for sports that is prevalent in most communities and always looking for support and member involvement.

Set yourself up as an industry expert at sporting associations

To stand out as an expert and further your own business interests, you need to be recognized by your peers. Most sports organizations present opportunities to impress your peers through speaking engagements, training seminars and writing opportunities. Start in a committee and volunteer to speak or write for the group until you develop a reputation that other members of the athletics group recognize.

I recommend: The National Sports Marketing Network is a dynamic group of sports industry professionals always looking for industry experts to address the groups at athletics organization meetings. The Amateur Athletic Union has so many regional and national events that they are always in need of talented volunteers who can share their expertise with members and the community.
