Guide to Television Organizations

Build your business contacts at television organizations

By Linda C. Ray

Television associations offer a slew of opportunities to put your business in position to receive positive recognition and increase sales. In addition to members of the TV industry organizations who work within the film TV organizations in some capacity, you will have opportunities to meet and get to know other members, including those who support the television industry organizations.

Affiliation with TV organizations provides lobbying and networking opportunities that can be immensely helpful to your own business interests while you support the industry. Membership in an international television association often means access to information and contacts that can be important to your own company. Regional TV associations offer even more opportunities to network with local business leaders in your community. Try a variety of methods to best utilize your membership in film TV organizations.

1. Expand your network through television associations

2. Support the industry by participating in TV associations

3. Stay informed with association of public television publications

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Develop business contacts in television organizations

TV associations hold regular meetings, seminars and conventions for members and interested parties. At television critics association events, as well as through various committees in which you can participate, you will have many occasions to socialize and network with other business people who support and work within television organizations. The business leaders you meet could offer a number of trade opportunities for you and your company.

I recommend: The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has a number of different peer groups in which you can participate. The Alliance for Community Media is one of the organizations for television that is very business-focused.

Demonstrate your interest by joining television associations

If you want to do business with TV industry professionals and those who serve the industry, you will want to show your support while building relationships with national and local leaders in the industry. You often can do this best by participating in television industry associations with both your presence and your financial support.

I recommend: American Women in Radio and Television is a media group that promotes the roles of women in the industry. The Children’s Entertainment Association is a trade group that supports youth-oriented entertainment venues of all kinds.

Keep your company in the loop with publications from TV associations

While you may not have time to participate in a trade group or volunteer on a committee, you can take advantage of membership in TV organizations through the myriad publications they put out. By keeping up with the reports and news in the industry, you can pick and choose which events will be most beneficial for you to attend while keeping updated on changes or news that affects national television organizations.

I recommend: The Parents Television Council has many local chapters as well as depth of resources in publication. The Entertainment Industries Council is a social awareness television organization that supports a variety of issues that affect the entertainment industry, making room for many different papers, books, guides and resources for members.
