Theatres in the USA are strong and thriving, not just on Broadway, but around the country as well. Comparing regional theaters in the US, one will find a wide range of offerings: from Shakespeare to exciting new works produced every day.
When considering staging your theater production, choosing the venue can be important. Did not Shakespeare once write, "All the world's a stage?" When considering the theater venue that’s right for your production, consider these options:
1. Regional United States theater venues
2. US theater venues located in major cities
3. US theater venues in the great outdoors
Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done
Choose a regional US theater venue for your production
Finding the best regional theater venue for your theater production can be an exciting exploration of the United States.
I recommend: Some of the theater venues in the United States are historic, and capture a portion of the rich history of the United States. One such US theater venue is the Trinity Repertory Company in Providence Rhode Island, which rents both the Lederer Theater as well as the Pell Chaffe Performance Center, a restored bank building. Another example of a theater venue in the US is the Round House Theatre in Silver Spring. It offers three venues for rent: two smaller buildings in Silver Spring as well as the company's main theater in Bethesda. Your production does not just have to be in one of the US theaters, but in a public building like a grange. These grange halls are in rural settings, and the rent can be less expensive than many professional theatre venues in the US. Two such examples are the Montague Grange, which is located in Pamona, Massachusetts, and the Pike's Peak Grange, which is located in Franktown, Colorado.
Find a city US theater venue
New York is one of the obvious first choices for finding a United States theater venue. To many, when thinking of theatre production companies in the United States, Broadway springs first to mind. In doing so, one does a disservice to the other US theaters that could serve as a wonderful venue for your production. Explore the nation's major cities for a theater venue that would suit any number of theatre production companies in the United States.
I recommend: Boston's Huntington Theatre offers three venues for rent: the Boston University Theatre, Stanford Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts, and Boston Center for the Arts Theatres on the Plaza. The Manhattan Theatre Club also offers its studio for rent, which could serve as a theater venue for your production. A third example is the INTIMAN Theatre of Seattle, which is available for rent.
Use the outdoors as your US theater venue
Go beyond Aristotle's fourth wall, and use the nature as the backdrop of your theater production.
I recommend: One of the most famous theatres in the USA is in Central Park: Shakespeare in the Park. Central Park, in the heart of New York City, is available as a venue for your production. Contact the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation for a permit. Make sure you do so well in advance of your production in order to give your permit time for processing and approval. Another famous outdoor venue on the other end of the country is the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, California. It is available for rent in May through October. Contact the theater for more specific information.

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide
- • Theater venues in the US can also be city squares. Contact the city office to learn about permits for holding outdoor theater productions.
