Guide to Hoists

How to choose between chain, package, and built-up hoists

By Kristina Seleshanko

Whether you call it a construction hoist, industrial hoist, or commercial hoist, if you're looking for one, the options may quickly seem overwhelming. There are a huge variety of hoists available for your business. To figure out which one is right for your needs will take some time and consideration.

Before you buy hoists, first decide whether you need a manual, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electric hoist. This is a simple question to answer, since it has to do with what sort of power source you will have available. (Although if you require high capacity, a manual hoist isn't the right choice.) Consider the following:

1. Will simple and basic commercial hoists work best?

2. Do you need a hoist for higher production?

3. Does your hoist need to take the highest capacities and speeds?

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Pick a chain hoist for basic needs

A chain hoist is the simplest type of heavy lifting hoist available. The average electric chain hoist has a one-quarter ton to three ton capacity, although some can handle up to 25 tons. There are also ergonomic styles that may be operated with one hand.

I recommend: Dearborn Overhead Crane offers a good selection of chain hoists from a variety of manufacturers, including ergonomic styles. Nationwide Industrial Supply carries manual and electric chain hoists, from "ergonomic" to "extreme duty" types.

Choose package industrial hoists for high production

Wire rope hoists are better for heavy use. There are two types: package hoists and build-up hoists. Package hoists are an 'integrated package' of proprietary parts used in high production settings needing quarter ton to 30 ton capacities at standard speeds.

I recommend: L.K. Goodwin Co. Inc. carries a wide variety of wire rope commercial hoists, including package hoists. Hoists Direct Inc. also sells new and used package hoists.

Pick built-up hoists for heaviest service

Built-up hoists do heavier service than package hoists, and are created to deal with capacities over 30 tons at high speeds. They also work best with long lifts.

I recommend: Virginia Crane offers custom built-up hoists that come with a wide variety of accessories. F&G Industries Incorporated also provides custom built-up hoists.

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Ergonomic hoists may be one of the most productive manual hoists available. A study at Rochester Institute of Technology showed workers were 68% more efficient using this type of hoist.
